Kearny is located on the Delaware River about north of Newark and east of Union City. The original name for Kearny was "Duncansville". It was changed to Kearny in 1795 because of an attack by French forces against the Native American tribe known as the Delaware Indians. The first store in Kearny opened in 1802. In 1840, a post office was established at Kearny with Wm. Hickey as receiver and clerk. In 1847-48, large numbers of Irish immigrants began arriving in northeastern New Jersey due to famine and overcrowding on their plantations in Ireland. Many of these men were farmers who bought land around what would become Kearney from native people or others who had acquired it through inheritance or purchase. The Irishtown community near where modern-day Kearney stands sprang up around this time; it continued to be called Irishtown after 1849 when the area became part of the new township OF Kearny (now part of Union City). Many early residents were Protestants but later many Catholics also came to live here; among them were Saints Xavier Jansen and Fransico Xavier de la Peña (the founder saints' parishes for both Catholic and Protestant services), who donated land for a convent which served mainly Catholic refugees from Europe during World War II; and John Fenton Pope, one of America's leading bishops during that time period whose churchyard still contains several headstones marking his mortal remains there (Pope's body has been interred since 1957 beneath a high altar dedicated to him within Sts John's Church). This community gradually lost its Protestant character over time as most Of those who arrived either did not stay long enough or converted to Catholicism before leaving again – although some continuoslly retained some Protestant religions icons like St Joseph’s Chapel which still serves as an active parishioner pulpit today - while others assimilated into mainstream society more quickly than many other areas throughout Essex County due largely to its location on/near one main transportation artery especially accessible by boat from points all over NortheastNJ so goods could reach participants relatively easily without having to drive very far anywhere else along that route... Even though much has changed since then including gentrification rates & job losses affecting older residents & businesses alike (& even more recently displacement wrought by Hurricane Sandy) few things have remained constant including strong traditions (and memories)of religious service days & events such as Holy Mass celebrated each Sunday morning at 5am local time inside Our Lady Of Peace Parish Schoolhouse located right next door (& regularly hosts special events such as 2-3 weeklong car shows etc.)"
