Kearny was founded by Dutch colonists in 1664 as an unincorporated community named Kesselwijk (meaning "the small chapel"). The town was first established on October 7, 1779, by order of Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet. HoweverHackett died before he could carry out his plan and work commenced on only two houses on this site: one known as Hackett House (now demolished) and another known as Tryon House ().hackett’s heirs sold these holdings to John Stevens in 1825 for $10 per acre ($640/hectare). Stevens built what would become known as Stevens Mansion (); Stevens also developed extensive commercial property around what are now Main Street and Fountain Avenue today., In 1830 John J. MacIntyre started construction on a sawmill which would become Souris Mills (). After several years of operations MacIntyre sold his interest to Benjamin Butler who operated it until 1870 when it went into partnership with Atherton Mills (), later renamed North American Mill Company (). In 1898 Alfred Sengenberger started production at NAMC’s first cotton gin (); eventually NAMC produced over 25 million pounds (13 million kg) of cotton each year from its mills until 1987 when they closed down due to technical issues.). From 1907 through 1916 many different companies manufactured automobiles including Singer Manufacturing Company (), Ford Motor Company (), Chrysler Corporation (), GMP Motors ()and Willys-Overland Motors (). During World War II many local businesses produced munitions including Bethlehem Steel Corporation (), Westinghouse Electric Corporation ()and Mattress &fabrics Incorporated On October 14th 1920 Atlantic Richfield company acquired majority ownership of IRT Holding Company effective November 1st 1920 with IRT becoming an wholly owned subsidiary of ARCO petroleum resources company parent company Gulf Oil Corp., [] subsequent divestitures included assetsuch as refineries along Route 22 near Plourde Lakeshore Airport[] It should be noted that Atlantic Richfield did not own any physical properties within or adjacent to present day Kearney although certain Processing Plants were located there such as those used for refining gasoline oil [] On July 15th 1941 ARCO Petroleum Resources merged into American Petroleum Institute parent company Standard Oil Coopers () subsequently all assets within IRT HoldingCompany were sold off alongwith their processing plantsoperating under various names such as Pennsylveste Refinery flushing crude oil pipelines etc., [] following this transaction much consolidation took place within ARCO corporate structure resulting in current day Management Structure whereby Headquarters are located insideARCO Corporate Center[]. Despite initial planning there was no major industrial development occurring outside of the immediate rural areas surrounding present day Earlington]; instead heavy reliance was placed upon service activities such as transportation, agricultural production and tourism catering primarily to suburban residents outsideof attendance at school core civic events ].
