Kearny was founded in 1757 by the Dutch. Kearny became part of the United States in 1846. The town was founded on a swampy lot that is now known as Market Street. In 1854, the town had a population of 100 people and it grew to 350 by 1870. By 1920, Kearny had a population of 3,000 people and it increased to 5,000 by 1930. The population decreased to 2,500 in 1990 but has since grown again with the addition of new businesses and residences.

Kearny also contains one of two small airports serving Sussex County - the other being Elizabethtown Airport in Elizabethtown Township. The community takes its name from General John A. Kearny (1769-1848), who fought during the American Revolutionary War and later served as an Ulysses S Grant's aide-de-camp during his governorship of Illinois (1847-1849). His grandson, Commodore John Augustus Kearny Sr., played an important role in developing what are now Atlantic City and Monmouth Junction into successful commercial communities during the early 20th century. In 1814, Major General John A. Kearney founded what would become known as "Kearney" when he moved to this area from nearby Rahway to purchase land for a new settlement which he called "New Brick Town." The first buildings were erected on this site by late summer 1814; however, due to severe flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy that year, most of the original structures were destroyed or damaged beyond repair within weeks of their erection date...In 1868, due to increasing population density and lack of available open space within Borough limits (due both to extensive development around town since then and advances made through annexation by other municipalities over time), it was decided that Kearny should be annexed into neighboring Sussex Township effective May 1st following a public referendum conducted pursuant toNJ Local Government Code Section 34:7-1(b)). Kearny is a small town located in Hudson County, New Jersey. Kearny was founded on December 3, 1795 by Englishman John Kearny and his wife Catherine Zabriskie. The first settlers were three families from Scotland who came overland from Glasgow. The village was originally named Greencastle but changed its name to Kearny after Captain John Kearny, an American Revolutionary War veteran who fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill. The town's history can be traced back to the early 1800s when it grew out of a group of farms that were part of the Morristown Township area. In 1824, the township was divided into two parts and Kearny became one of the new townships within that division. The first resident to live in what is now Kearny was David Moseley who moved there from Rahway in 1824. Over time, many other settlers arrived in what is now Kearney including Isaac Van Arsdale, Ebenezer Holmes, Josephine Merrill and their children Esther (1829-1912), George (1830-1914) and Lowell (1832-1918). The town experienced some growth during World War II with increased automobile production and population influxes coming from all over New Jersey. local businesses like Joplin Glass Works started up as people drove to work outside of Newark or Paterson for their products. Many residents also served in the military during World War II such as Arthur Kesselring who worked at General Motors plant in Camden and went on to become Allied Commander Europe during the war years. After the war ended, much migration occurred as many people left for various reasons such as jobs opportunities or family reunification across America. Today, Kearney retains a strong community spirit with many businesses still operating along Main Street including Mrs Donahue’s Pizza which has been open since 1954; Chambers Hardware which has been open since 1922; United Methodist Church where services are held every Sunday morning at 9am; Hawk’s Nest Cafe which opened its doors on October 1st 2006; Pier One Imports which specializes in seafood items; Stonington Golf Course where residents play golf most Sundays throughout summer months; Andaz Italian Restaurant where customers can enjoy Italian cuisine indoors or outdoors on hot days throughoutsummer months.; More recently popular tourist attractions include Hemispherical Earth Exhibit at Phillipsburg Museum & Science Center - Open Fridays 10am-5pm - A rotating exhibition of more than 100 East Asian art pieces dating back to 6th century BC - Enjoy live music nightly at Revolution Live! The village, which is now part of Union City, NJ, was first called "New Newark" and then "Newark". In 1798, the town became a township under the jurisdiction of Hunterdon County. It was renamed Kearny in 1837 after General Andrew Kearny who fought in the Mexican-American War. The name changed again to Union City in 1881 before becoming Kearny again in 1907.
