Kearny is a borough in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,876 at the 2010 census. Kearny is one of five municipalities in Mercer County that are part of the Camden-Bergen- Passaic Junction Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to encounter the area now known as Kearny was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and his group of Italian explorers who had been sent by Spain to explore North America. The name "Kearny" was probably derived from this event or from an Indian word meaning "hollow place." In 1764, George Washington's army marched through the area during their campaign against the British. General William Howe's forces were camped on what is now Huntington Avenue when they discovered American troops were nearby and withdrew without battle. The town began to form around 1800 when some farmers who had land near Fort Cumberland started selling their products to people living in Philadelphia and other settlements along the Delaware River. In 1809, Captain John Stevens built a small wooden fort on what is now Beacon Hill which served as a trading post for local farmers and traders. A grant from President James Kildare in 1825 allowed for the construction of a road connecting Philadelphia with Trenton via Middlesex County; though it did not become active until 1830 due to construction delays caused by wild terrain over which it would haveTo travel. This road became known as Route 22 after its routing through Kearny Township (now part of Lloydville). On July 4, 1857, Kearny residents voted unanimously to annex Burlington Township because Burlington had failed to provide tax support for its own municipal development since its incorporation into Mercer County two years earlier. In 1860, a new bridge across the Delaware River was completed allowing access from Newark toPhiladelphia; making Kearny one of only two places within Mercer County where people could now be located without crossing the river (the other being Westwood). The annexation also made possible annexation by neighboring East Brunswick Township which had formed less than two miles away west on Route 22 but never annexed into either municipality – an event that has been certified as official history by both townships since then! Despite this growth potential among its citizens, however, little progress was made towards developing any important services such as water or wastewater systems until 2000 when Community Renewable Energy Corporation established a wind turbine farm adjacent to Interstate 95 just outside of town limits - providing power both before and after dark! -On October 2nd 1954 Mayor John Fenton signed into law legislation creating New Jersey's first township board composed entirely of lay members instead of appointment only politicians like previous boards dating back prior even further! After years struggling with fundraising efforts spearheaded by civic activists numerous building projects including public schools/library/cafeteria addition/renovation have taken place throughout town spawning various businesses such as gas stations/restaurants etc... Kearny County was first organized on December 12, 1795 under the name of Gloucester County. The area that is now Kearny was part of Burlington County until 1802, when it became a part of New Jersey. The county seat and largest town was Rahway. Other towns in the county include Monmouth Junction, Mayacaquid, West Deptford Township and East Paterson Township. The first settler in what is now Kearny County was Nicholas Purdy who came to Rutgers University in 1536 as one of the students from Gloucester Township (now Rahway). Purdy's family later built a house on the present-day corner of Burlington and Essex Streets in Rahway. In 1797, John White moved his family to what is now Kearny from Elizabethtown Township (now Princeton) after purchasing land there for $1 per acre. White started a mill at present-day Mayacaquid and manufactured goods such as butter and cheese for local farmers. In 1800, he donated land to the College of New Jersey for use as a college campus. The first buildings were erected on this campus, including an old chapel which still stands today. In 1812, during the War of 1812, Kearny County served as an important military staging ground due to its remote location and strategic position between New York City and Philadelphia. The Battle of Black Hawk Heights took place here on October 8th while skirmishes occurred around nearby Monmouth Junction just days earlier on September 24th near what is now called Greenbelt Park off Rte 202 northbound near where Interstate 95 meets I-95/Route 66 interchange Today’s Black Hawk Heights neighborhood can be traced back to this early skirmish fought by units from both sides less than two miles away from where we stand today The population growth from 1800-1850 varied depending on how you measure it; however, according to the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey for 2000 there were total 1 million residents living within Kearney Counties limits then – unchanged since 1991 based upon latest ACS data released every 5 years During World War II many soldiers stationed at Sharpsburg Barracks east of Newark went “hunger strike” after not being given their regular rations which led to mass demonstrations throughout Newark beginning February 25th 1944 known as “Operation Paper Clip” or simply “the Newark hunger striker episode” resulting in uprisings all over Delaware Valley against UMAP forces with similar goals across America
Kearny was founded in 1777 by Captain John Kearny. The town was named for General George Washington. In 1876, the town had a population of 1,500 and it became a borough on December 12, 1876. On October 10, 1907, the Borough of Kearny merged with the Village of Union to form the City of Kearny.
