Kearny is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,723. The name Kearny is derived from an early French explorer and cartographer Jacques Cartier's discovery that the river Balboa originates in this area. Kearny was incorporated as a township on November 12, 1824. On May 30, 1860, the town of Kearny and portions of neighboring Union Township were merged to form a new municipality known as Kearny-Union Township. On January 1, 1961, all of Union Township (excluding part of the current town) was annexed by Kearney to form a new municipality also known as Kearny-Union Township. The former townships are now included within Mercer County. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Mercer County were French Huguenots who founded Fort George on July 29th 1609. The fort served as an outpost for France during the earliest days of European settlement in North America. The English built their first permanent home at West Milford prior to 1714 when they moved southward along the Delaware River to Upper Bucks County and began operating one of their many forts there under Governor John Montresor. In 1717, Sir William Johnson established another British outpost at Long Branch which later became Princeton University; both these outposts were abandoned soon after their establishment because of aggressive Native American attacks which forced them vacate their positions and made possible English colonization throughout much of North America In 1732 Dutch traders arrived at Brooklyn Heights where they established a trading post called “New Netherland” before continuing on upriver to what is today Philadelphia In 1734 British traders named John Foy set up shop at Newark near Bound Brook but quickly abandoned it due to Indian raids A year later Captain Francis Nicholson arrived with his fleet off Staten Island and discovered an open bay between Staten Island and Manhattan making him hopeful that he had found what he thought was India land However upon landing he realized that this was only 10 miles wide instead of 4 miles claimed by England but since his discovery no one else followed up so Nicholson decided not pursue it further He returned home without any real discoveries though his report helped spur English efforts towards exploration After some consideration Secretary James Kents sent Lieutenant Colonel George Monmouth with orders travel downriver estuary searching forGateway Lake while sending back news about potential land grants overlanders could make from East Anglia bypassing Rhode Island seem more likely than imaginary colonies on Long Island or Connecticut In October 1735 Monmouth sailed into Kingston Lighthouse Tavern promising passage around Cape Horn if anyone could find confirmatory evidence about an open water route through South America These provisions led Admiral Edward Vernon who commanded Britain's forces against Spain's forces alongthe entrance to New York Harbor
