Kearny is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Kearny is located on the South Branch of the Delaware River and is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first recorded inhabitants of Kearny were Native Americans who lived along the riverbank. In 1764, John Kearny founded a farmstead on what is now Main Street in Kearny and named it after his father-in-law, Colonel Thomas Pynchon. Over time, other family members added to the property until it had six or seven buildings including one house which still stands today on Center Street in Kearny. When Commodore John Stevens anchored his ship "Newfoundland" near Camden in 1778 for supplies, he erected a stockade around what is now known as Battery Park and built Fort Totten to protect his ships from hostile Indians. The fort was abandoned by 1802 when Camden seceded from New Jersey and became Philadelphia. In 1834, George Washington bought 640 acres (252 hectares) in present-day Kearny from Nicholas de Weede for $5 per acre ($/km2). Washington then set about developing it into an agricultural community with agriculture as its primarystay and named itafter himself – George Washington Rural Town – although some historians question whether this name actually originated with President Washington’s deed or if it was simply another effort to give away land that was not yet under cultivation. It took many years before any crops could be grown here because of lack of moisture availability due to high hillsides; however, by 1868 wheat had been sown and soon production had increased so much that water rights were acquired from various municipalities downstream for irrigation purposes only! Farming continued until World War II when most residents moved away to work in nearby cities during wartime industrialization but several families have kept their farms active through Market Garden Markets Today: Air Force Base Store (next door), Colonial Williamsburg Historical Society Museum Store (southwest corner), Olde English Millinery store across Route 9W (northwest corner), Hellenic Orthodox Church & School across Route 9N (east side). Kearny is a borough in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,828 at the 2010 census. Its ZIP code is 07703. Kearny was incorporated as a borough on April 3, 1868, from portions of East Orange and Princeton townships. The first settler in what is now Kearny was John Purdy who arrived in 1792. He built a cabin on the mountain near where he lived until his death in 1827. His grandson also settled there and named it Purdyville after him and his family. In 1813 William Halsey established an bakery here which became known as the "Halsey Bakery" or "Halsey's". In 1865 George Smeaton founded a tannery here and continued to produce tan leather until 1915 when he shut down due to World War I restrictions on tanning operations. In 1850 Methodist Episcopal Church located here; services were held at various locations before arriving here permanently in 1870. In 1870 Alvin Cook moved to this area from Camden and started his own grocery store called Cook's Grocery & Provision Store on Main Street which would be renamed Kearny grocer in 1902 when Cooks' company merged with nearby Huntingdon Drug Company to form Hunterdon Drug Corporation (HDC). This company offered general merchandise items such as groceries, plumbing supplies,auto parts and accessories etc., along with drugstore services such as prescriptions writing/filling/delivery etc..HDC operated under several names throughout its years including the Trust Company of America (TSA), First National Bank of Newark (FNB) and First National Bank of Hunterdon County (FNBC). HCG eventually merged into HDC during 1998-1999 when all three banks were acquired by Jardine Fleming LLC for $1 billion becoming part of Jardine Fleming Holdings Inc.. The early days of HDC were difficult becauseHunterdon County had not been organized yet but things started to improve once HDC got its charter from the state government: first they opened a branch office at Morris Heights in 1899; then they bought land around present-day Edison where they built their first building - still standing - serving as their headquarters until 1944! In 1944 HDC moved its headquarters permanently to downtown Newark thanks to Mayor Fiorello La Guardia’s push for more commercial development within city limits – one result being that much of what is now Kearny came through redevelopment efforts over time including the erection of numerous high-rise buildings throughout town center including One Liberty Plaza – one of whose towers can still be seen today looking out over downtown Newark! Kearny was first settled in 1750 by Captain John Kearny and his men from New York. In 1775, General George Washington's army invaded New Jersey and fought their way through the state to Pennsylvania. The Battle of Princeton was fought near Kearny on September 14,1775, and resulted in a victory for the Americans. The town's name is derived from Lieutenant Colonel John Kearny's role in this battle.
