Kearny, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Mercer County and the second largest town in New Jersey after Trenton. Kearny lies on the Delaware River between Camden and Philadelphia. The first European settler in what is now Kearny was Nicholas Denison, who arrived there on July 10, 1686. He named his land "Kearny" after John Kearney of Rhode Island who had come to America that year with his family as part of a group of settlers known as the "New England Company." In 1714 Nicholas Denison's son George bought from James Livingston of Centrepoint Township east of Trenton for $2 beaver skins and 100 acres (40 ha). George's grandson Moses purchased from James Livingston again for $4 beaver skins and 160 acres (60 ha). This became Emerson Township which formed part of Cumberland County until 1836 when it became part of Mercer County. In 1796-97 Samuel Blanchard built a gristmill on the Delaware River near where present-day Eastern Boulevard would later be created. The mill became one of the first commercial enterprises in what is now Kearny. At its peak production it produced flour, coffee beans, sugar cane syrup and other products. By 1800 all but two percent of all flour consumed in Pennsylvania was coming into this township from these mills; by 1805 only two percent remained here while over eighty percent came from nearby Middlesex and Bucks Counties producing mills in those counties alone. In 1824 John Stevens started a small brewery here which continued operation until 1886 when it closed due to competition from larger breweries across Pennsylvania costing him more money to operate than he could make back at his mill income alone without outside investment or subsidy. The town was named for General John Kearny, one of the three commanders who led American forces during the American Revolution. Kearny had a population of about 1,200 at its peak in 1814 and 2,100 by 1840. Kearny's history began with Dutch farmers who settled there in 1683. The first European to come to Kearney was Nicholas Van Tassel, who arrived in 1689 and erected a cabin on what is now Market Street. In 1707, Captain John Stroud landed at Newcastle Landing on Long Island and sent his son-in-law Nicholas Van Tassel to survey land grants around present-day Kearny. From here he dispatched two other men--John Snyder and George Washington Smith--to purchase more land from theNative Americans near present-day West Orange and make additions to what would become Kearney Township (now part of Queens Borough). On December 10, 1727, Joshua Latham purchased all that remained from Captain Stroud including Fort Nassau which lay at the mouth of Hackensack Creek on Long Island Sound opposite Staten Island[1]. In 1728/29 General James Wolfe came through this area on his way to victory over British troops at Saratoga Springs but he never reached Kearny because he encountered bad weather en route. A portion of Wolfe's army passed through this area while marching southward across Hunterdon County towards Princeton[2]. Captain Stroud returned home after his Purchase butJoshua Latham continued farming and enjoying good health until his death in 1792[3]. One reason for Joshua Latham's long life may have been his business acumen; he had many customers among both Native Americans and English settlers alike for goods ranging from blankets to cannons.[4] He also traded with various Native American groups along the way such as those surrounding Newark Valley including the Lenape people (who lived east of Trenton).[5] Moses Winant also achieved some prominence in local affairs as justice commissioner for Bergen County from 1796 until 1800[6], making him one of only two officials ever appointed by Continental Congresses(the other being Robert Morris). Winant is most noted today for leading negotiations that resulted in removal of all vestiges of Native American cultural artifacts from public view throughout New Jersey beginning in 1984 known as “The Museum Project”.
