Kearny is a small town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,510 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest town in New Jersey and the second-largest community in Mercer County. Kearny is located on the border of Mercer and Camden counties. The name Kearny comes from an ancient Native American word meaning "a place where deer abound." The first settler in what is now Kearny was John Nicholson who arrived in 1764. In 1837, Captain Isaac Parker founded the city of Kearny on land which he had purchased from the Lenape tribe. In 1839, Captain Samuel Morse established a post office at Kearny with mail service to both Philadelphia and Baltimore. In 1912, Driggs Manufacturing Company merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation to form Eastern Shipbuilding Corporation. On July 1, 1951, Eastern Shipbuilding Corporation was absorbed into United States Steel Corporation. Kearney residents voted to become a city on November 3rd of that year by referendum; however this vote did not take place because it conflicted with an election being held for Mercer County Executive that same day (the city's mayor at that time was George Browne). On May 8th of 1964, Mayor Earle Hirschman announced plans to build a new municipal building using money raised through a private citizens' campaign called "New City Bonds". After much public opposition, including threats of violence against developers if they did not turn over their money within 24 hours or face legal action, the project proceeded despite heavy police presence throughout construction; ultimately only one building (the administration building) was completed before it burned down in 1971 while under renovation. The original Main Street between Second and Third Streets still exists today as part of local shopping district called Station Square Shopping Center which also includes several restaurants and other businesses as well as two banks: First National Bank and Citizens Trust Company - originally built there during World War II as part of Project Neptune Pipe Line Extension Plan No 2 (1946). In recent years many small businesses have closed due to online competition or changing market conditions but some such as Peschel’s Pharmacy remain open along with several other stores that were once part of Neptune's Electric Light plant which went out of business after being damaged by Hurricane Sandy . Kearny is a small town located in central New Jersey. The name Kearny comes from the Native American word meaning "to store goods." The first settlers in the area were Dutch, and the town was first established in 1701. In 1847, Kearny became part of New Jersey. It was chartered as a borough on March 5, 1847. In 1864, it became an incorporated village and on May 11, 1966, it became a city. As of the 2010 census, there were 16,711 people living in Kearny Citylimits with a population density of 102 people per square mile (39/km²). The history of Kearny goes back to at least 1701 when the Dutch began to settle in this area. They named their settlement Kerkhof or Chapel because they believed that God would help them store their goods here. By 1800, over 20 families had founded what is now known as Kearny Township. The township was organized on April 14th of that year under the leadership of Colonel John Stevens who donated land for its establishment. On July 1st of that year, Captain George Haines set up shop in what is now known as Northeast Plaza which served as both his business and home until 1830 when he moved to East Brunswick where he started his own trading business called Haines' Wharf & Fish Market Company- still active today! In 1824-25 Captain John Stevens again led an effort to form a township; this time under his son Lieutenant Colonel John Stevens Jr.'s guidance and assisted by Captain Amos Eaton from Elizabethtown Township (now Paterson) and Major James Purdy from Sayreville (now Morristown). After much debate and discussion there was finally placed upon maps submitted by three commissioners - one representing Elizabethtown Township Committee; one from Newark; one from Princeton - allocating 4 lots within 2 miles of each other for election purposes on March 26th 2527 resulting in selectmen voting 3 to 1 for incorporation into “Kearney” Borough! Incorporation proceedings continued nonstop through two days with meetings adjourned due to lack of members! A committee chaired by Selectman Chase soon announced plans for brick buildings on Main Street NW between High Street NW and Pine Street SW – cornerstone laid November 8th 1830!!! This building still stands today (& functioned as Post Office until 1978)! It wasn't until 1846 that Kearney received its first title – Borough! This was due largely to efforts by Mayor James Fenton who made sure that all residents within the boundaries were treated equally including those living outside town limits which at that time constituted only 2% of our population! Although not everyone agreed with Borough status Beaver Dam Creek Bridge opened September 9th 1850 carrying vehicular traffic over this then unnamed stream connecting town center with outlying areas making it possible for citizens within easy reach regardless of location… also becoming Swedenborg’s Chapel!! Borough deliberations continued sporadically through 1861 but on January 6th 1862 newly elected Mayor Augustus Kelley convened an election meeting attended by all members present including Mayor Fenton stating “that we should have no more electionsuntil we can get something better organized than this rabble could manage” resulting in appointing Elijah Gribbon [sic] Commissioner To take care Of correspondence matters etc., effective February 1st 1863…. subsequently disbanded…. reorganized into City Council…..elected annually October 15TH thru December 15TH !!
