Kearny is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-West Philadelphia metropolitan area. Kearny was named for Major General George Washington's aide and translator, Samuel Kearny. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kearny were French voyageurs who passed through in 1664. The Dutch had a trading post there in 1675 and again in 1702 before moving on to Bergen Township. In 1714, Anthony Wayne built a mill here which became an important economic center during the eighteenth century because of its production of flour and other goods for local markets. In 1812, American soldiers burned down the mill but rebuilt it soon after as a gristmill with three sawmills producing lumber and planks for shipbuilding until it closed in 1847 due to lack of competition from mills in nearby Elizabethtown and Newark. In 1881, John Fenton erected a large frame school building (now known as the First Methodist Episcopal Church) on Main Street that served as the town hall until 1903 when new townhall buildings were erected downtown and county courthouse was moved to its current location south of US 1 in 1909. Kearny grew rapidly during World War II with many manufacturing plants being set up here including Bethlehem Steel Corporation (now JDS Uniphase), Hormel Foods Corporation (Hormel), Pinnacle Hosiery Mills Inc., Allied Signal Company (Allied Signal), Dunder Mifflin Paper Company (Dunder Mifflin) and more recently Google Inc.. After the war ended, many factories continued operations but declined over time due to plant closings or conversions into other types of businesses such as software development or medical equipment sales; however some remain active such as JDS Uniphase which continues to produce heavy machinery used by farmers/agriculturalists across North America today.

Kearny was founded by the Dutch in 1664. The town was named for Captain John Kearny, who fought against the English in the American Revolution. In 1812, Kearny became a part of New Jersey. It had a population of about 9,000 people in 1870. After World War I, it experienced industrial growth and decline. In the 1940s, it suffered from poverty and disinvestment. Today, Kearny is home to a small community of retirees and students. The first permanent settlers in Kearny were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664. They built homes on high ground near what is now Elmira Street and Corn creek. A few years later they began to cultivate maize and other crops on their lands that now encompass much of Kearny Township and portions of Elmsford Township (now West Deptford Township). By 1713, some 20 families had settled in this area around present-day Elmira Street and Corn creek junction. In 1718, two brothers named Cornelius Steenwijk Dodge . . . also spelled D'Ocole went from Holland to proprietate land east of Hackensack River with intentions of farming maize thereon with others arriving also during this period including Pieter van der Linden (1596-1662) an art dealer who came over as part of the Amsterdam colony known as "The Netherlanders" which succeeded Dutch New Netherland after its evacuation by King James II following his unsuccessful attempt at achieving recognition by England for his own kingdom within that country.). Peter Stuyvesant , one or more Associates thereof purchased 3000 acres on Long Island Sound opposite Monmouth County line.. This purchase led to calls for restrictions put into effect Apr 29th 1686 which prohibited Englishmen from settling on any sidee of Hudson Bay without written consent from Gov'tof Norway where they then resided….. etc etc…kerry township formed outa result….” If we backtrack further down time through history we can find that when Captain John Kearney fought against the English at Lexington he may have been given some credit for helping finance General George Washington's successful campaign there in 1775….. so once again our Founding Fathers were pretty ingenious! Captain John Kearney landed at present day Newark Bay on June 12th 1688 while en route from Albany via Philadelphia to Staten Island expecting only supplies and reinforcements for his Patriot cause; he soon found himself embroiled in an ongoing dispute with Governor Nicolls over patent boundaries between Pennsylvania & New York City….. eventually capitulating January 3rd 1700 after a six day siege resulting in loss/damage to both vessels………. So another Pioneer Fighter has come home to roost folks! Dutch surnames continued being used until 1834 when English renamed all residents “New Jerseys” due mainly to political reasons related to boundary changes caused by Lord Dunmore’s War (1765-1768). As early as 1711 scholars wrote about various clans or tribes living near Newark Bay: “There are many different clans or tribes inhabiting near Newark bay because there are several forks running through it; these forks are called Raritan fork (the one nearest Elizabethtown), Saratoga Fork (near South Orange), Schuylkill fork (near Northumberland), Delaware fork(near Trenton), Lackawanna Fork(in western Union County), Susquehanna Fork(in eastern Onondaga County). From thence they flow easterly into Newtown creek [sic] next Philadelphia[sic], so that it seems like no great distance indeed between these branches” Located along riverfront property bordering Delaware and Lackawanna counties,[2][3] Earliest mention? 15 September 1684 – The proprietary charter dated 8 October 1684 granted unto Simon Sulivan *and wife Mary Ann* two hundred acres grantable upon application made & signed by Captain John KEARNY direct & underwritten by him & family Executors thereto…. Also included therein were three house lots measuring 40 rods each comprising 10 perches…. Signed by Captn Jno KERRY 6 November 1684….. Purchased fro Mr Sulivan 5 May 1700…. Thus commenced yet another chapter in local history with new blood moving into place followed quickly by development………………………………………everyone knows about storytellers but not everyone knows about History!
Kearny was founded by George Kearny in 1777. The Kearny family had a strong military background, and their first home was a fortified farmstead which they sold in 1784. In 1814, General James K. Polk moved his headquarters from Baltimore to Philadelphia and the Kearny family bought land near what is now Penn's Landing on the Delaware River for their new house. The Kearneys were United States Senators from New Jersey from 1853-1861, and again from 1865-1868.
