It remained a township until 1967 when it become an incorporated borough because of its importance within thePhiladelphia metropolitan area as well as its population size relative to other municipalities within Mercer County. In 1999, Kearny underwent significant redevelopment that included construction of new schools, hospitals and other infrastructure projects totaling more than $100 million dollars including the foundation for one mile (1 kilometer) long waterfront park known as Riverside Park/Lake Erie Boulevard which began operations in 2001 with full-time management by city officials responsible for programming and daily operation by park Rangers

They built a small fort on the present-day site of Kearny Township during their occupation of New Netherland. In 1714, British settlers arrived at Fort Lee and began construction of Fort Orange on Staten Island; this fort became known as Fort George after George Washington's victory over France at Saratoga Ridge in 1777. Kearny Township was formed with portions of West Bergen and Hackensack on November 3, 1837 from parts of Upper Bergen Township and Teaneck Township respectively. On February 7, 1882, it succeeded West Babylon as the Borough of Kearny within Bergen County following its creation when that township was divided between Middlesex (now Union) County and Hudson County under an act passed by the New Jersey Legislature which took effect on April 1, 1881. According to the United States Census Bureau, Kearney has a total area of , all land. Borough residents may use public transportation provided by NJ Transit: Newark Penn Station is located outside town limits and provides service to both Newark Liberty International Airport (IATA: EWR) and Midtown Manhattan; PATH trains run frequently between Newark Penn Station and points east including Manhattan; bus service is also available from various stops throughout town including Northgate Place Shopping Center which serves as one stop for local buses serving both Kearny Junction Road/Route 20 & 21A (northwest corner), Southgate Avenue/Route 9 & 10A (southwest corner), Old Bridge Road/Route 5 & 6A (southwestern corner), Atlantic City Transportation Authority's Frankford Terminal located downtown along Pennsylvania Avenue - adjacent to Atlantic City Municipal Services building - provides service to several blocks south along I-95 corridor servicing eastern Princeton Street & Woodbridge Street - opposite Broad Ripple Casino - across streets from RBC Plaza hotel - providing access not only to shopping but also to several hotels within walking distance such as Trump National Golf Club – Bedminster Turnpike off Route 44E
Kearny was founded in 1795 by Jonas Kearny and his wife Rebecca. The town was named for Captain John Kearny, a Revolutionary War veteran who fought at the Battle of Saratoga. In 1849, the town had a population of 375 people. It declined in population until it reached its current level of around 50 residents in 1950.
