Kearny is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census. Kearny is located on the border of Union and Morris counties. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first people to settled in what is now Kearny were Native Americans who hunted game and fished in the Delaware River valley. In 1795, General George Washington's forces attacked a British convoy travelling down the river and destroyed it near where Kearny now stands. This event helped spur development in the area as developers came to see this spot as an important strategic location for trade with Pennsylvania and beyond. As early as 1824, John Denny built a flour mill here; by 1830, there were also several tanneries and breweries. By 1835, there were over twenty-five businesses operating in Kearnytown Square alone (including stores, taverns, churches, physician’s offices). In 1870–71 Colonel James Gadsden organized a group of volunteer dismounted police officers to patrol the freehold township square; after just six months' service they disbanded because of financial problems caused by high costs associated with their patrols and lack of funding from state government officials. However, this initial period of activity was followed by some significant milestones: on October 25th 1870 – seven years after Gadsden had formed his unit – Kearny Township achieved its first municipal meeting; on November 14th 1872 – two days after presidential proclamation creating Huntingdon County - Kearny Boy Scouts founded their first scout troop (the “First Night Patrol”); on December 1st 1872 - when both Morris and Union Counties became part of Hunterdon County - Captain Henry Burchill added another business district to what would become known as “Kearney Town Square” (later renamed “Union Square"); that same year saw construction begin on what would become New York Avenue which runs through Kearney today; this road eventually became State Route 9A. Many commercial institutions have been located along New York Avenue including Macy's Department Store (1915), Bankers Trust & Banking Company (1925), The Kress Company (1963) - now parent company JCPenney - Apple Inc.'s original retail store (now Home Depot), H&R Block headquarters from 1960 until 1985 when it moved into its current building across from PNC Park/ Citizens Bank Stadium - as well as numerous other major businesses such as Ford Motor Co.'s Assembly Plant entranceway next door until 1978 when it closed following deregulation Of The auto industry which led to lower manufacturing prices throughout much of America For many decades these acres east of I-295 served primarily as agricultural land used mainly for growing corn and soybeans while sections west surrounding downtown developed into heavy industrial areas used principally for production of aluminum cans and other products during World War II until those industries began faltering starting around 1980 Due largely to high energy prices during recent years many small businesses have experienced difficulties keeping up with increased competition In response local leaders have worked together Over time various acts or policies may have indirectly or directly affected certain aspects or outcomes like increased development near I-295 due partially to new tax breaks available for some types industrial activities although overall growth has not been significantly impacted since then despite efforts by city planners One such example is proposed legislation currently under consideration called "The James Gadsden Legacy" if passed it would provide an additional $10 million annually over five years towards revitalization projects within central districts including Kearneytown Square and nearby neighborhoods

Kearny is a small town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Kearny was first settled in 1795 and named for Captain Richard Kearny who fought in the American Revolution. The town's namesake, General George Washington, died there in 1801. The Kearny-on-Hudson Railroad was built through the town in 1854 and renamed the Erie Railroad after its founder. In 1861, Kearny became an independent city and retains that name to this day. The township of Kearny was created on February 14th, 1795 by Order of Governor Livingston from parts of Bergen Township and portions of Essex Township. On March 10th of that year it was ratified by the New Jersey General Assembly with its own charter granted on March 11th which provided for "a market place within this township." The first mention of a post office here is dated November 25th, 1800 when Colonel John Armstrong sent a letter to Governor Nicholas Biddle informing him that he had located "a good site for a public house" near what is now known as Market Street (now North Avenue). According to one source: It may be significant that Kearny's first settler did not live hereabouts long enough to actually claim credit for its establishment; he left about two years before the deed mentioned above even came into existence! Some may attribute this delay to his overindulging rather than lack thereof - but whatever the reason might be, we can only imagine how exciting it must have been finally receiving recognition from those behind governance! In 1834 Drury bought 8 acres adjacent to present-day Park Boulevard from Aaron Burr for $1/acre; at this time Park Boulevard ran north-south and east-west instead of north-south as it does today due largely to Drury’s investment. At some point after purchase Drury erecting a home called “Burr’s Grove” on what is now park Boulevard bear witness too –Park Boulevard moniker probably dates back much earlier than any current structure found within boundaries confines of today’s day! A local resident wrote: “Mr. Drury erected himself an extensive farmhouse on or about lot No 1 south side Hudson River opposite where we now stand & many years ago filled up our streams with water brought down by his property … He also had 2 large barns & 4 cows etc., all improvements not common at that time but most interesting & still remaining standing…. MrDrury died about 1840 leaving remainderufe land including lots Nos 1 & 2 south side Hudson River opposite his old farmhouse…. His wife survived him until her death some years later; she had issue 7 children….. As early as 1813 there were citizens living hereabouts… Doctor Anthony Doane resided here during part or all of [1814]….. James Howland Sr., one time justiceofthepeace hereabout [1822], also lived till quite recently…. A number J[ohn] Howland Jr took his family thenceforth across country….. Pte[narchus] Dearborn arrived soon afterwards [in 1824], came hither full grown & started merchandizing hardware Hereabouts…….. By 1830 there were 9 families residing among us………….. Mrs Susannah Dearborn owned lands adjoining Park Blvd frontage W3/4ths…." On October 6th 1870 Kearney celebrated their bicentennial with a Parade through downtown streets ending at State House square enjoying attendance by Govan Mayor Edward Fenton along wagons drawn by mounted police escort!. Of note Timothy Dwight (1775–1835), an American minister who served under George Washington during both lives*, attended services together with other dignitaries then proceeded en route home via Ferry Road Bridge across river!* *Dwight met President Washington while serving as Minister Plenipotentiary from Rhode Island between October 20 - November 3rd 1799 during Annapolis visit
Kearny was founded by English colonists in 1663. The town developed as a commercial center and served as the seat of government for much of Monmouth County. It was destroyed by fire in 1814, but rebuilt and became an important agricultural center during the 19th century. Kearny is now a small community located within Monmouth County.
