Kearny was named for General John Kearny who fought in the American Revolution. Kearny was founded by English settlers in 1764 as a small community on the banks of the Passaic River. In 1836, it became one of seven townships (developed from portions of Hunterdon and Morris counties) that formed Union Township, which included Paterson and other large cities. In 1914, Kearny became an incorporated municipality with its own government and police department; it limits its jurisdiction to just over 3 square miles (10 km2). In 2000, Kearney voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation by Woolwich Township pursuant to a plan submitted by then-Mayor James Meehan. At first only 22% of residents voted in favor; however, after Woolwich Township began accepting applications for annexation from other municipalities within Hunterdon County – including Teaneck and South Hackensack – strength quickly grew to nearly 60% in support of annexing Kearny into their township. The merger was approved by both Hunterdon County Executive Jim Velda and Hudson County Executive Thomas DiNapoli on November 8th 2001; the new municipality’s name is now Union Township-Kearny Borough (U2B). The Town has two schools: One public school serving students K through 12th grade with 6 full time teachers and 100 student athletes; and one private school serving students kindergarten through twelfth grade with 10 full time teachers and 300 student athletes as well as 7 shop/manufacturing/service businesses located within town limits that are open to all students without distinction based upon socioeconomic status or race/ethnicity. There are also several summer camps available for children age 4 through 16 years old which offer sports camps such as soccer camp, basketball camp & more!

Kearny, New Jersey is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,241 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kearny is located on the eastern edge of Hunterdon Township and contains one elementary school and two middle schools. The area that became Kearny was first settled by Europeans in 1675 as part of Hackensack Township. In 1815, it was annexed to Middlesex County and renamed Kearny after Brigadier General John P. Kearny who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The town's first store opened on Main Street in 1817 and its first post office opened in 1820. A sawmill and gristmill were built soon after and production increased until 1899 when an industrial park was created east of the town which limited development to just a few businesses near Interstate 95/Newark Avenue. In 1930, Norris-Keenan Paper Company began operations here with newspaper presses from America’s Great Lakes region; it continued until 1997 when it moved to Rahway, New Jersey. In 1984, Alcoa started aluminum smelting at its plant here; this ended in 2000 when Alcoa abandoned its local production due to2009 global economic recession caused by overproduction within the Aluminum industry worldwide Today much of what once made up Kearny has been replaced or destroyed by new development while others are slowly but surely recovering The original Dutch settlement at what would become Kearny dates back to 1675 as part of Hackensack Township (now Hunterdon County). At that time there were few European settlers living along Lakeonqua Creek because it was only accessible through landowning families who had rights to hunt game or fish in that area . On July 11th , 1714 John Zenger sailed from Newark Bay for Albany with 300 British troops under Major George Washington . Heading upstream they encountered French forces led by Francois de Villefort who attacked their ships sounding an alarm before setting fire to their boats leaving them stranded onshore . Aftermath many citizens took refuge aboard HMS "Gloucester" where Villefort's force landed seeking plunder but were driven off when a group of militiamen boarded Gloucester rescuing many women and children including Zenger's daughter .....Hearthstone Journalist & Historian William Leary wrote about this event: “On July 11th [of 1714], another large body of English soldiers arrived at Albany - this time under Colonel John Norris ... They disembarked upon shore under cover of darkness … Lt.-Colonel Norris ordered his men not onlyto resist any attack from De Villefort's party but alsoto take all opportunity offered for plundering without risk to themselves .... By morning both parties had dispersed .... Thereafter DevilleFounded himself Captive among these English Soldiers till his Surrender being granted him on October 25th [of 1714]” The location where Kearney now stands remained undiscovered for several years until surveyors discovered some promising placer gold deposits nearby during their 1837 mapping survey .That same year (1837) Nicholas Lapp bought 1 acre (0.4 hectare) near present day Park Plaza Shopping Center from Harriman Copper Mines Co., which then leased it back to Nicholas Lapp & Son… KEARNY CREEK formed following rainfall events resulting from showers hitting NJ during winter months especially December thru February…..Through farming activities such as raising corn seed etc….and later quarrying coal & other minerals……..the community prospered until 1907 when steel mills appeared aroundNJ making transportation less expensive…..When those mills closed down most residents commute into Newark using buses available throughout NJ…Today little remains except some farmlands used for grazing animals
Kearny was founded in 1795 by Joshua Kearny and his wife Sarah. The Kearneys were the first permanent settlers in what is now New Jersey. They named their settlement after Captain John Kearny, who had led an expedition from Boston against the Native Americans in 1775. In 1814, the town was renamed for General James K. Polk, who had played a role in America's victory over Mexico at the Battle of Palo Alto.
