Kearny is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area and is located on the southern tip of Long Island. The first permanent European settler in Kearny was Nicholas Astor, who arrived in 1764. He named his property "Kearny," after the town of Kearsarge in England where he had been born five years earlier. In 1814, John A. Kearny purchased from Nicholas Astor four hundred acres (1 km²) of land east of present-day Kearny Lake and laid out a township thereon on May 12, 1815. It was initially called Clinton Township but changed its name to Kearny Township on October 5, 1817 when it became part of Union County. On January 1, 1834, Kearny incorporated as a borough under terms provided by act cosponsored by Senator James Kieft and Assemblyman George Biddle (R-Dover). On November 3rd that year an election found incumbent Mayor Samuel Dennett (D) unseated by challenger John Purdy with 51% of the vote to Purdy's 49%. On December 2nd Dennett appointed Charles Ewing as mayor pro tempore effective immediately pending the results of an election to be held on December 9th which would have allowed him to serve only until an election could be held for a new mayoralty which had never been scheduled before due to term limits set by Act No. 10 of 1922 which regulated township elections within their respective boundaries; however no such election took place because Borough Council members were not re-elected on December 2nd despite having served one year since their appointment instead being given three months notice that they would no longer be able to serve due to termlimits violation.). In 1941 Kearney annexed portions of neighboring West Orange Township while West Orange Township annexed portions of neighboring Ridgewood Township making it so that all three townships formed one unified municipality with a total population over 20,000 people representing more than 100 homes and businesses including many factories during World War II as well as post-war reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Sandy which devastated much sections of New Jersey Shoreline communities including Atlantic City center: During World War II about 1500 men worked for GE at two plants located just north side Main Street off US 301: The plant closed down in 1971 but still leaves evidence viz.; large piles Of Coal dust left behind from engine room door open onto street Today’s building housing Shoprite grocery store can also be seen across street from older power Plant building/shed used as storage during WW2 days

Kearny was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1664. The town was named for Captain John Kearny, who fought in the American Revolution and died at the Battle of Saratoga. In 1851, Kearny became a borough and was incorporated as a city in 1902. It is now a part of Paterson, New Jersey. In 1795, General James Kieft established Fort Tryon on the southern tip of Manhattan Island and built up an artillery battery to protect his landing there. Kieft's men were able to take possession of the island on September 26th after defeating an Indian force led by Chief Weequahicotter. The new fort served as a prison for British officers and troops during the Revolutionary War and later became known as Kemptown after Lieutenant-Governor Nicholas Biddle. In 1825, Delaware County was formed from parts of Middlesex County. The area that would become Kearny became part of Delaware County when it was divided between the two counties following the American Civil War. At first, Kearny consisted only of agricultural foothills west of Newark Airport with few buildings other than farmhouses dating back to before 1800s. One major development that took place in early Kearney occurred when real estate developer James Fenton bought land east of Newark Airport in what is now known as North Park Heights section in 1870 for $1 per acre (about $40 per square mile). This land had been purchased by then-Commissioner Lewis Cass from Major George Washington Irving for $2 per acre (the price at which he acquired it). By 1870, Fenton's holdings extended along Canfield Avenue from North Park Heights all the way to South Orange Avenue near where Interstate 95 currently exits onto Park Avenue heading into downtown Newark; this included much of what is now Midtown East section of Paterson! One can only imagine how beautiful it must have been to live within minutes' walk or drive – including today's busy streetscape –of some major commercial/residential areas during these early days! With modern amenities such as shopping malls nearby (like PNC Plaza), one can see just how important commerce and transportation were back then! There has never been any question about its importance since designation as a City; many people still refer to it simply as "Kearny".
