The name “Kearny” comes from two places - one being where General John Kearny fought at Saratoga and the other being near County Down on Ireland’s border where Irish immigrants settled during the mid-19th century. The word “Kearney” appeared on several deeds issued between 1800 and 1830 including one from Nicholas French which spells “Carrick”; this may be because early settlers found coal here rather than rice or other crops they were looking for. In 1870, when Kearney Township was created out of parts of Dumont and East New York Village, there were only about 100 residents living there total; by 1910, that number had grown to over 30,992! One reason for this increase is due to improved transportation infrastructure – sawmills began producing lumber right off the bat due to better connections through ferries to Manhattan (and later Jersey City). Additionally, more people started moving into Kearney as prices for land rose throughout the decade leading up to World War II – many new homes were constructed along Route 22 just south of town! During Prohibition (1925- 1933), much activity took place within the limits of town including bootlegging operations which led to some arrests and convictions; however overall crime rates remained relatively low given both communities' small sizes. Overall social stability did not suffer as a result though – most people lived close together with few problems ariseing outside of farming or local commerce

In 1916, Kearny became part of New Jersey when it was created from parts of Bergen County and Essex County.
