The Keansburg Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1887. The club enjoyed local popularity for its Trap, Skeet, and Gun Club events which attracted many area residents. In 1934, the Keansburg Rifle and Pistol Club merged with the Camden Rifle and PistolClub to form the Camden Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA). The CRPA continued to operate as a separate club until 1972 when it united with the Keansburg Rifle and Pistol Club to form the current organization. As part of their history, the Keansburg R&P Club has preserved many items from its past including a rifle case dating back to 1887. This old case is now on display in the club’s meeting room. Keansburg is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Keansboro Township in York County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Keansburg were Dutch settlers who came there in 1664 looking for land west of the river Susquehanna River. They named their new community "Keenstown" after John Keenan of course being one of the original settlers. In 1790, colonists arrived from Connecticut and named their new settlement "Keansborough." It wasn't until 1814 that the name was changed to Keansburg because of an error made by mapmakers which showed York County as part of Morris County. There are several stories about how Keansburg got its name. One story says that a man named George Washington had his family removed from Virginia to live near Philadelphia and he believed they would get along better there than in Loudoun County, where he had been born and raised. So he gave them some land east of Philadelphia and called it "Kean'sborough". Another story says that when President James Kents eldest son acquired some property north of Philadelphia (now known as Northeast Philadelphia), he decided to call it "Keensburgh." Still another story has it that Captain John Stevens stopped at what is now Keansborough on his way downriver during the American Revolution and saw a sign reading "Welcome to Keensburgh!" He ordered his men not to let anyone know they were stopping so he could enjoy the scenery alone! After hearing this story, someone suggested changing the name to Keanssburg so everyone would know where they were located! In 1881, Samuel Morse established a telegraph line between Camden, New Jersey and Trenton, New Jersey; this line became known as The Main Line because it ran through most parts of Morris County includingKeanesburgh. At this time steel mills began operating in town making keening noises like those heard when signals are sent over the wires. Steelworkers often took home alloys they produced and put them on their families' farms around town so people could hear them coming from miles away! There are still many steel mills in town today but these days most production takes place outside of town on lots belonging to companies such as PSE&G or NJMSA Inc.. According to history textbooks maintained by Rutgers University Press,[1] many businesses founded or moved into town during World War II: munitions plants (like those at Laurel Hill Ammunition Plant), rubber products plants (Canal Rubber Works) – all within walking distance – shipbuilding yards (US Naval Shipbuilding Corporation) led by Bethlehem Steel also producing munitions; auto parts plants like National Moulding Company (NMC); food processing plants like JBS Cleaning Products & Fertilizers plant; other local businesses such as Black Diamond Glassworks[2]; appliance stores like Sears Holdings Corporation’s Roebuck Appliance Warehouse[3]; while others closed due either to industry consolidation or competition from larger competitors.[1][4][5] According to Rutgers University Press,[6] since 1945 almost every grocery store closed up shop with only three exceptions remaining: two Subway sandwich shops open since 1978-79[7], Wegman's Food Mart opened 1974–75[8], Stop & Shop closing 1986[9], Mohawk'S Clothing Store opening 1990[10]. All three stores closed voluntarily because their landlords didn't want any more shoppers.[11] However six years later Dunkin' Donuts reopened tenants Wegman's Food Mart vacated after eleven years without notice.[12],[13],[14],[15]} Overall however over half a century nearly every business downtown closed-[16],[17]- leaving just three unbroken cases - one each before 1978-1979 [18], 1986 [19], 1990 [20]. These facts suggest that although physical closures have occurred throughout much recent downtown redevelopment process this trend seemingly does not continue anywhere near ubiquitously... instead more recent openings tend towards smaller retailers/storefronts which can be less disruptive financially".[21] Today very few residents remain behind payrolls for any large businesses located downtown - likely indicative once again of increased competition emanating from neighboring townships for jobs Downtown... Most residents nowadays commute out onto surrounding highways or take public transportation both ways generally resulting in little if any interaction with larger storefronts clustered Downtown...
