Keansburg is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is considered part of the Camden-Wilmington-Easton metropolitan statistical area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Keansburg were Dutch traders in 1614. The present town was founded by General Israel Putnam on November 10, 1798, after his victory at Saratoga over the British army. In 1802, the land that now makes up Keansburg was ceded to Rutgers University for $10,000 cash and an acre of land each time it made land grants to other universities as part of a larger campus expansion program. Rutgers also built Saint John's Episcopal Church and School (now known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic school) in 1802 and First Presbyterian Church in 1826. In 1865–66 the township was consolidated with Burlington Township. When American troops burned Princeton during World War II their supplies were brought here from nearby Middletown and West Orange so that Keansburg could not be used as a target by German forces during the war effort. Afterward Keansberg continued to grow slowly but steadily until its peak growth around 1990 when it had a population of 3,500 people; however this growth stopped abruptly due to several factors including increases in commuting costs caused by New York City's booming economy and technological advances which made local goods more expensive overseas than they were locally. However since 2000 there has been steady growth again with a current population of 2,711 people according to the 2010 census

Keansburg was founded in 1795 by the Keans family. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s, and by 1881 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1892, Keansburg was incorporated as a city. By 1920, the city had grown to over 5,000 residents. In 1930, Keansburg became part of the new Jersey City metropolitan area.
