In January 2006 Keansburg announced plans to build a new high school campus which would have increased its population by 10%. However this project was never completed due to financial difficulties and lack of support from local officials and voters who disapproved of the proposed development).

Keansburg was founded in 1798 by John Keans and his wife, Susannah. The original town was on the site of present-day Paramus, N.J., but the first courthouse was built in Keansburg. In 1811, John Keans donated land to form the basis for what is now Jersey City. In 1828,Keansburgh became an incorporated municipality and remained so until 1959 when it merged with Union City to form Union City-Jersey City. The township's first post office opened in 1802; its second office was moved to Paramus in 1809. The name of the township originated from a stream that flows through it (the name means " Kelsoe Stream"). The community developed primarily as a agricultural center due to its fertile soil and ample water resources. The residents produced cheese, apples, potatoes, grain, flowers and other crops. Many businesses were established here including the Jardine Mill which still stands today and manufactured goods such as boat anchors and saddles until around 1920 when it closed down due to financial difficulties caused by World War I production shortages. In 1911, Keansburgh became home to one of America's earliest airfields – Newark Airport – although it only served general aviation operations at that time. After years of being used for storage during World War II because of lack of space on the airport property, Newark Airport finally reopened in 1990 following renovations funded largely by private donations from individuals within the city’s business community. It is currently home to New York Jets football games as well as New York Liberty soccer matches against local teams from Monmouth CountyNJ

The community grew rapidly and soon became a center of manufacturing. In 1837, Keansburg was incorporated as a municipality. In 1950, the city passed a resolution recognizing the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum as an official source of education about the Holocaust.
