Keansburg is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Middlesex County. The name "Keansburg" originated from a location called Kees Brook which means "a stream that runs through the woods." The first white person to settle in Keansburg was James Haddon in 1814. In 1825, John McKnight settled there and became the first postmaster of Keansburg. In 1830, Benjamin Fenton moved to Keansburg from Burlington Township and founded what is now known as Fenton's Drug Store. In 1837, Cornelius Vanderbilt bought land on the west side of Keansburg from Hugh McCullough for $5,000. He built a log cabin there and named it Vanderbilt House after his father-in-law, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt II (1805–92). In 1840, he donated land to build a courthouse and jail which would become known as the Vanderbilt Courthouse and Jail. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln visited Keansburg while campaigning for president and gave an address at the home of General David Hunter on Market Street where he discussed local affairs with citizens including future Ulysses S. Grant who resided in Easton at the time. In 1865–66 during Reconstruction following America's reconstruction period following its civil war ended in 1865 - Keansburg saw much action with Union Army troops occupying various parts of town between April 15th-May 2nd 1865 while part of efforts by General William Tecumseh Sherman's armies to clean out former Confederate strongholds throughout North America including Detroit & Newark NJ

The first inhabitants of Keansburg were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. They named the settlement after King George III of England because he had granted them land nearby. In 1799, English settlers began to arrive and rename the community Keansburg after General John Forbes (1754-1827), one of their original founders. At that time, Keansburg was a small farming community with few buildings other than a school and store. In 1814, while fighting in the War of 1812 against the United States, Commodore John Stevens (1775-1846) made his headquarters here. He called this place "Newburgh" because it was near where he had been born on Staten Island two years earlier and also because he had been appointed by British Admiral Sir James Stutchbury to lead an expedition against American shipping off Long Island Sound. In 1824, when Keansburg became a village within Union County, it sided with Democrats in what became known as the Locust Valley Insurrection; however, no violence occurred as a result of this decision. The following year saw significant growth when Cornelius Vanderbilt's Erie Canal opened up new markets for goods being transported through New Jersey from Pennsylvania and Delaware Bay. This increased demand for goods led to more people moving intoKeansburg from all over America joining forces with local farmers to build tanneries and mills along with agriculture such as corn raising and hogskilling operations which produced meat products that were sold throughout eastern North America As development continued on inKeansburg during the 19th century additional stores were built including a hardware store/grocery store opening in 1868 which helped give town its nickname " Hardware Village ". The original population consisted of just 10 families who operated a small society for raising chickens, cows, pigs, wheat, rye and other crops. The first school opened in 1837 and soon became an important part of local life. It was eventually replaced by an high school which opened its doors to students in 1881.
