The Keansburg Ammunition Depot was established in 1875 and remained in business until it closed in 1966. It was the first ammunition depot in New Jersey and one of the earliest to be built in the United States. The depot was located on Main Street in Keansburg, about 15 miles northeast of Newark.
Keansburg, New Jersey is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Atlantic City metropolitan area. The name "Keansburg" derives from the English word "Keen," meaning "safe." The settlement was first established in 1798 as a small farming community on the west bank of the Delaware River between Camden and Atlantic City. A larger town called Keansburg grew up around it, but it declined in popularity after 1815 because of its distance from both cities and its lack of amenities. In 1851, however, Keansburg became an incorporated village when all of Morris County was divided into townships. In 1881, Lester Pemberton donated land to Keansburg for a public square and playground; these were named in his memory. In 1902, William Haddon donated land to Keansburg for a new high school; this was also named in his honor. By 1920, most of what remains today of Keansburg had been developed as housing estates called Forest Hills and Belleview Estates; these are now known as Westwood Village and Eastwood Village respectively. The first post office at KeANSBURG was established on November 1st 1800 by Ezekiel Hicks with five other settlers under the name “Creekstown” (now part of Monmouth Junction). The original postmaster’s desk can still be seen inside the current Post Office building on Main Street in town today! In 1882 Samuel Wolkowitz built himself an opera house which he called “The Palace” within sight of his farmstead where he entertained important people such as Presidents James K Polk and Ulysses S Grant among others during their visits to Morristown during their time as Governors of New Jersey! From this point forward until 1915 KEANSBURG enjoyed continuous growth with many new businesses opening up including several banks and several large manufacturing plants like Heublein Rubbermaid who created over 100 jobs that year alone! All this activity led to increased traffic congestion on nearby Routes 10 and 33 which contributed greatly to KEANSBURG's decline starting around 1915 until it finally slipped into obscurity following World War II when many residents left for better opportunities back home across America!!
