Keansburg, New Jersey is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Keansburg was first settled by German and Dutch farmers in the 17th century. The name "Keansburg" derives from Keeshond (Keenan), an early European settler. The original Post Office was established in 1765 and remained in operation until 1876. In 1824, John Kean founded what would become Keansburg Township and named it for himself and his father-in-law George Kennan. George Kennan had come to America from Germany as a young man and had married Sarah Stewart (also known as Sarah Perkins) on November 30, 1815, in Perth Amboy Township, New Jersey. After their marriage he moved to Keansburg with his wife on May 3, 1824. They lived there until her death on October 5 of that year; he then lived with his son Robert at 147 Cranberry Street until his death on December 10 of that year also from complications from measles). The first school in what is now KeANSBURG Township was organized on March 12th of1765 by Pte Stephen Crane who taught arithmetic & surveying to frontier settlers looking for land charters or grants office information On July 15th 1800 a group of 8 "Dutch Farmers" kidnapped one Mr Fenton's daughter which led to the Battle of Monmouth Heights resulting in 4 deaths including 2 Captains John Andros( Commodore USN ), Jacob Riis( Captain NYPD ) & Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr.( Commodore Vanderbilt ). This event helped spur homebuilding frenzy throughout NJ during those years

In 1814, Keansburg was first settled by English colonists. The town was named for John Kean, a British general who led an expedition against the Native Americans in 1755. The first white residents of Keansburg were Captain Benjamin Banneker and his wife Lucy Banneker. From 1819 to 1825, the community was known as Bankstown. In 1825, the town became part of Jersey City and was renamed Keansburg after James A.Kean, Jr., a wealthy businessman and philanthropist from New York City. The town enjoyed success during the 19th century as a manufacturing center with a variety of businesses including breweries, stores, hospitals and schools. However, World War I (1914-18) caused significant economic decline in the town; at its peak it had only two businesses open for business. By 1920, the population had decreased to around 100 people and it ceased to be an active community until 1955 when it reemerged as part of Jersey City again.
