The first handguns in Keansburg were built by Nicholas Applegate, a gunsmith who worked in the town for more than 25 years. In 1836, John Dickson built the first shooting club in Keansburg. It was located on Main Street and consisted of six to eight rifles and two shotguns. The club met monthly to shoot at local hills. It is reported that some of the earliest handgun shootings took place at this club. By 1879, there were several pistol shops in town and pistols began being imported from France and other countries. Many of these guns were used by soldiers during the American Civil War because they lacked cross-country transportation options. In 1892, Jens Jensen opened his own shop in town which became known as "The Pistol Place". He continued to sell handguns until 1903 when he moved his business to Reading, Pennsylvania due to prohibition laws enacted in America at that time.
Keansburg is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is an agricultural community located on the southern bank of the Delaware River. The first Europeans to visit Keansburg were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his group of Italian sailors in 1524. They went ashore to trade goods with the local Indians and noted buildings such as a "church" and "farmstead". The first European settler in what is now Keansburg was George Fishwick who arrived in 1764. He built a log cabin on the site of present-day Keansburg High School. The early settlers were primarily Dutch but some Englishmen also followed Fishwick's example and began to settle in what became known as "the Township of Standish". In 1814, John Fenton purchased from Fishwick land west of the river for $1,000. Fenton built a two-story house on this tract which he named after him, standish meaning place where trees grow (Fenton had purchased land from Fishwick's father). In 1822, Isaac de Grandpre bought land east of present-day Keansburg from Fenton. He renamed it de Grandpre Manor after himself and erected a three story brick house thereon. One year later he sold his interest in de Grandpre Manor to Abraham Bemis who founded the townsite of Keansburg Township on May 10th, 1825 (Bemis had come overland from Pennsylvania that same year). On October 11th following by deed by Deacon James Caldwell Jr., Joshua Coffin donated 1/8 acre (0.28 hectare)Block #2 corner lot No.(3)of Section 7 north side South Main Street between West Second Street & East Third Street between Market Place & Broadwalk Road opposite Gov't Store being bounded by Northampton County Line 3 rods due south And 1 rod due east Of said Lot mentioned; This donation constituted part of section 8 south sideBroadwalk Road between West Second Street & East Third Street between Market Place & Broadwalk Road opposite Govt Store being bounded by Northampton County Line 3 rods due south And 1 rod due east Of said Lot mentioned within bounds aforesaid which lots lay contiguous To each other forming one Block & forming Streets conformable To LOT NUMBER IN PLACE WHERE PARCEL WAS SALEED NO(4). A few years later Abraham Bemis donated another 2/8 acre block (#5)to Samuel Morse along South Main Street nearpresent day Spring Mill Stream.. This block forms today's proposed square footage around Park Avenue intersection... They named it "Brielen" after their ship Brielle which had made the trip from Rotterdam to Manhattan that day. In 1814, General John Armstrong's army burned down the town's court house and jail in revenge for the Battle of Monmouth Bridge where his forces had been routed by British troops under Colonel James Wilkinson two months earlier. The discovery of oil in Keansburg in 1911 led to an influx of people and businesses into the community with industries such as manufacturing buses and oil refineries beginning operations soon afterwards. TheKeansburg-led economy boomed until devastating effects of World War II caused many businesses to closure or move out; however, some have since reopened including a KFC restaurant which opened in 2002. In recent years KeANSBURG has been experiencing revitalization with new development including local breweries (Flaming Lips Brewery & nano brew), art galleries (Lumière Gallery), retail stores (Pineapple Express) and restaurants (Keefe’s Tavern).
