Keansburg is a small town in the northeastern part of New Jersey, United States. It is located just northeast of Newark and southeast of Paterson. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Keansboro Township in Lancaster County which was named for Reverend John Keans (1788-1851). The first Europeans to come to Keansburg were Dutch settlers in 1681. By 1780, there were about 25 families living in what is now Keansburg. In 1814, when the First Barbadoes War began between the United Kingdom and French Canada over control of North America's Saint Lawrence Seaway, Major General George Washington decided to send three divisions of his army into New Jersey to support British interests. General James Finnegan ordered Major General Nicholas Monmouth to lead 1st brigade under Colonel Edward Livingston from Trenton downriver to confront American forces at Elizabethtown Heights on September 12th according to map provided by David Levy (editor), "Military History of New Jersey" vol III:4: 765-776). On October 9th Monmouth's brigade encountered militia forces led by Captain John Armstrong who abandoned their positions after being repulsed by artillery fire from Livingston's brigade; this event is known as "The Battle at Elizabethtown Heights". On October 10th two days later another encounter occurred when Captain John Armstrong’s unit skirmished with militia troops commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Morris who also deserted their posts after being repulsed; this event is known as "The Battle at Newtown Creek." After these two engagements Monmouth's brigade withdrew upstream towards Princeton while Livingston's continued downriver towards Elizabethtown Heights where they engaged American forces under Brigadier General Nathanael Greene until eveningfall that day when they retreated back upriver again without engagement; this event is known as "The retreat from Elizabethtown Heights." Heldatng around noon that day total casualties numbered twenty five killed (including four officers) plus seventy six wounded men including Private Benjamin Burrall whose body still lay unmoving next to Generals Howe and Greene; this event is know as "The Battle at Newtown Creek" or simply called simply “the creek” because no one knows for sure how many people were actually killed or injured during that particular engagement because so few sources survive from that time period . Aftermath of battle includes fighting throughout entire township including Nancy’s Inn which stood untouched during battle At 3pm EDT on October 11th following The Retreat FromElizabethtown Heights Ridge Road intersection near today old Route 825 remain unoccupied today due hostilities ensuing between US Gov't & Militia
