In 1851, Samuel Keansburg purchased a rifle from Nicholas Coles of nearby Paterson. The rifle was the first modern firearm inKeansburg and it soon became an important part of the town's culture. In 1871, Keansburg voters passed a ordinance establishing a city government and prohibiting firearms within its boundaries. This ordinance made Keansburg one of the earliest municipalities in New Jersey to prohibit handguns.

Keansburg is a small town located in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Hallandale-West Camden metropolitan area. The first European to visit Keansburg were Dutch settlers in 1664. The first permanent English settler was Nicholas Mansfield in 1719. He built a sawmill and gristmill on the riverfront and named it after his birthplace, Kentish Town in England. A post office was established at Keansburg in 1806, and the town took its name from John Kean, one of four sons of Thomas Kean (1646–1720), a landowner who founded what is now Camden Township in 1714. In 1854, during the American Civil War, General George McClellan made his headquarters at Grand View Heights near present day Mount Pleasant before he moved north to Morristown to lead the Union army against Confederate forces under Robert Ewell Jr.. On July 9th 1863 when McClellan's army approached Mechanicsville (now West Chester), they found Confederate units entrenched around Sandy Hook Mountain and ordered their withdrawal without battle; this action marks the start of what became known as "The Battle of Gettysburg". After three days of fighting which resulted in over 1,500 casualties for both sides, Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered on July 12th at Appomattox Court House with nominal losses on his own part. In 1865 following Vicksburg Campaigns victory over Confederate general Pemberton at Bear Creek Bridge – an event commemorated by Ulysses S Grant's namesake bridge – all but two thousand Yankees who had garrisoned Savannah left for North Carolina; those few Americans remaining would serve as one of history's most infamous slave armies during Reconstruction period through much of America. Finally ,the late 20th century brought about increased traffic congestion resulting from various extenuating circumstances such as engine failures on bridges spanning interstate highways causing backups stretching mile long while motorists paid extortionately high toll prices - even though county government officials had long predicted these problems would result from freeway construction plans dating back decades prior to any recent highway construction taking place within township borders - primarily affecting residents along I-95 Corridor who experienced immense inconvenience resultant from purported inconvenience costs exceeding $100 per day plus additional charges imposed for using local fire extinguishers instead of incidentals manufactured by state DOT - ultimately leading some drivers boycotting NJ Transit buses service altogether rather than face multiweeklong backup periods whenever going anywhere beyond township limits) .

Keansburg, New Jersey is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of Keansburg Township. The first settlers in what is now Keansburg were two families from Rhode Island who arrived in 1738; they called themselves the Forster and Green family. They built a log cabin on the site of what is now the village of Keansburg and started trading with other villages around them. By 1800, there were over fifty small settlements scattered around present-day Union County due to its location at the crossroads of several routes important for transportation and trade. In 1814, John Pemberton leased 1,700 acres (6 km2) north of today's Keansburg from Nicholas de Vere for $5 per acre ($/km). This area became known as Pembertonland because it was used for farming and grazing sheep and cows until 1840 when it was patented to Jameson & Company. In 1835, surveyor George Washington Bainbridge completed an official plan for Union County which includedlying almost entirely within present-day Keansburg township except for a small amount located east of Route 22 near Spring Lakehurst. At that time only about 10% ofUnion County had been surveyed. Bainbridge's plan designatedKeansburg as the county seat since much land north of wherepresent-day KeANSBURG stands had yet to be developed as farmland or housing estates during this time frame In 1845, John Atherton purchased 1,500 acres (6 km2) northwest of today'sKeANSBURG from Nicholas de Vere for $10 per acre ($/km). This area became known as AtherTONLAND because it would become home to AtherTON mills which produced flour and cottonseed oil until 1917 when those operations were transferred to Sayreville NJ . AtherTON also constructed a sawmill on Mill Creek which served as one stop on the Newark Division Railroad before closing in 1924 after producing 100 tons (100 t) of lumber each week . Keansburg was founded in 1795 by Abraham Keans and his wife Sarah. The town was named for John Kean, a Revolutionary War soldier who fought at the Battle of Ramseur. In 1824, Keansburg became the county seat of Warren County. The population grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching 2,000 by 1875. During World War I, Keansburg played an important role in the defense of New Jersey as a munitions manufacturing center. After the war, the population decreased but remained influential within the community until it formally dissolved in 1970.
