Keansburg, New Jersey is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,872 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mercer County. The community was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1873 and named after Keansburg, Pennsylvania (now Scranton), where they had been serving as missionaries. The name has also been used for other nearby towns such as Uniontown and Bloomfield Township. The first post office in Keansburg was established on February 15, 1875. Its name was changed to Mercerville on March 1st of that year. On July 1st of 1899 the town became the county seat of Mercer County when it was separated from Uniontown Township. Keansburg is one of several communities located along the Susquehanna River east of Philadelphia that were organized during the American Civil War to form a network that could support trade with Philadelphia's booming industrial sector. As a result of this network development, Keansburg became an important manufacturing center during Reconstruction following the war and into the early 20th century; its industries included textiles, shoes, lumbering and agriculture (mostlyraising pigs).
