The first commercial production model of a flashlight was produced in 1879. In 1886, the American Manufacturing Company began producing firearms under the name Smith & Wesson. In 1903, Edison invented the light bulb and it was initially used as an electric lantern until 1907 when it became available for purchase as a consumer product. By 1915, there were over 1,500 manufacturers of flashlights commercially selling products throughout America. The year 1916 saw the introduction of the AA battery operated flashlight which allowed users to use their devices more easily at night time when darkness reigned. Shipyards operated by Cammell Laird & Co., John Latham & Sons (later JL&S), Pile-Driver Shipbuilders (later PCS), John Stevens & Brothers (later JS&B) and others developed during this time period throughout what would become one of America's largest industrial districts. The nickname "The Gateway metabolites" refers to this era when Jersey City played a leading role in developing new American chemical products such as nylon rope and rayon fabrication beginning in World War II.
