On October 15th 1814 – less than two months after James Kenedy's order – land speculators John Stevens & Samuel DeWitt purchased 8 acres (3 hectares) at what later became West Side Park from Andrew D'Angelo for $1 per acre (0.40 ha). Steven's Purchase marked one cornerstone in what would become one of Greater New York's largest real estate developments; until it closed its doors for business eight years later – following streetcars arriving at Pier 92 via Rutgers University Avenue –Stevens operated hisown real estate department under contract with various insurance companies who acted as buyers/ sellers throughout that period – including during much OF THE height OF THE BUSINESS ERA when prices were highest…. A portion Of THIS WEST SIDE PARK still remains today….. Pershing led an army through northern New Jersey during the Mexican–American War when he invaded Mexico City; his objective was to force Mexico out of Texas so that American settlers could claim their lands north of the Rio Grande River without Mexican interference. This battle resulted in more than 50 deaths among Americans and more than 100 injuries including 14 who lost their eyesight due to shrapnel from artillery shell fragments caught up in their hair while marching across open ground near Monterrey’s old walls (now part of downtown Mexico City). In 1865 Battle Of Gettysburg followed when Union General George Meade's army attacked Confederate General Robert E Lee's forces inside Maryland Heights near Fredericktown MD after choosing instead to cross Balls Mill Road eastward instead of attacking from behind! There were some 6-10 thousand casualties inflicting over 12-14000 fatalities on both sides but this represents only 1/3rd or 1/4ths of all military engagements fought during America’s Civil War! By 1920 however most major battles had been fought elsewhere within America having become tired of periodic warfare against small armies equipped with primitive technology compared to Germany & Russia !! In 1951 William Paley became Mayor Of Jersey City after running unopposed for office twice before becoming Mayoralty record holder with 27 years!!! He served until 1974 when he resigned amidst scandalous allegations related To his wife’s affair With then Governor Edwin E Johnson who would eventually be impeached & removed from office following revelations about his own extramarital affairs!!!!! After serving as acting Mayor For One Month Bernard Kerik took over From Paley When It Was revealed That Kerik Had Previously Been Sponsored By A convicted Gambler Known As “The Shark” Who Paid Forker To Suppress Any Evidence Against Him!!!!!! kerik would serve as mayor again From 1984 until 1989 Before retiring due To health problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jersey City was founded on September 24, 1709 by the British colonists as the town of Perth Amboy. It became a city on April 30, 1847, after it was combined with Dumont (now part of Jersey City) and Monmouth (now part of Morristown) to form the new county of Hudson County. The area now known as Jersey City was first inhabited by Native Americans, who called it "The Dyke" because a dyke protected their land from flooding. In 1664, English colonists named it Perth Amboy after King James I's lieutenant in New Netherland, Sir John Perth who had helped succor the Dutch during the siege of New York City. The original name may have been derived from an Indian word meaning "to protect." On October 25, 1709, George Washington and his army attacked Fort Lee while they were marching through what is now Jersey City. As Washington's army passed through town on their way to battle at Trenton Hill later that day, local farmers and merchants came out to welcome them with food and drink. They renamed the town for General Washington in recognition of his help against the French in North America during the War for Independence. The old fortification still stands today and is used as a museum; it is also home to one of two memorials to American Revolutionary War soldiers located in Midtown Manhattan/New York City: One honors Major General John Burgoyne who surrendered at Saratoga Springs on July 12th, 1777; and another honors Lieutenant Colonel Richard Johnson who died fighting at Bunker Hill on December 15th., 1775.
