Jersey City, New Jersey is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 33,624 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-most populous city in New Jersey and the most populous municipality within Bergen County. The area that would become Jersey City was first inhabited by Native Americans. In 1664, Sir George Carteret bought land from the Lenape people in what is now Hudson County and named it after King James II of England's native country of Jamestown. On July 26, 1850 – less than two months after bankruptcy laws were passed – Jersey City became an incorporated municipality under state law with a population of 740 citizens On November 14th 1861 Hurricane Sandy destroyed much of Atlanticport including all but about 100 residents east of Mulberry Street which became known as "The Block". Most residents fled to higher ground but some chose to rebuild their homes facing forward following predictions that Sandy would pass through directly next door rather than affect them so they could take advantage of insurance benefits offered then That day Hurricane Sandy made landfall near Monmouth Junction Eyewitness accounts report seeing power lines snap like twigs before treeswere uprooted large chunks came tumbling down raining glassy water onto rooftops turning everything black before finally rolling away leaving behind an extensive destruction field
The area around Jersey City was first inhabited by Native Americans. The first European to explore the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who explored the coast of New Jersey in 1524. In 1609, Dutchman Hendrik Hudson sailed past what is now Jersey City and named it after his home country, Netherlands. The city began to grow rapidly as a result of its location on the southern tip of Manhattan, and in 1808, it became a part of New York State. In 1865, Jersey City seceded from New York and became an independent republic under the name of Jersey City National Park. The city experienced significant growth during World War II as a result of its strategic location at the Battlefields of Normandy and Berlin. As a result, two large military installations were established within the city limits: Naval Station Newark-Port Monmouth and Naval Station Camden-Fauntroy Hills. In 1970, however, Newark became the new capital of New Jersey when Trenton took over fromJersey City as the state’s second largest city.
