As one of America's most economically vibrant cities, jersey city has seen significant redevelopment over the years with several large projects completed such as PATH Station (opened in 2002), Giants Stadium (closed in 2010) and Liberty Township Park (opened in 2015).
As one of the most populous and economically bustling cities in New Jersey, Jersey City has been home to a wide range of cultures and attractions over its history. From the earliest days of the city's settlement through to the present day, Jersey City has seen growth and change as a result of its location on the southern tip of Long Island. In 1821, Captain John Smith founded what would become known as Jersey City after landing there on July 12th from HMS Beagle. The following year, he named it for Prince George, Duke of York who had died in 1762 during the Seven Years' War. In 1832, Governor James K. Polk renamed it "Jersey City" in honor of his then-long-serving friend and predecessor within the United States Senate, John Dickinson. The early 20th century was a time when Jersey City underwent major growth with numerous business establishments opening up throughout downtown including banks, hotels and factories. However, by 1944 both Nazi Germany and World War II had stripped much of what little economic activity existed in the city center - leaving it largely abandoned until the late 1970s when redevelopment began anew which has continued to this day. Today's skyline includes iconic buildings such as One Penn Plaza (now part of Chase Manhattan Bank) and Trump Tower as well as newer additions like Liberty State Park and Newark Liberty International Airport which have helped make Jersey City one of Newjersey's most popular tourist destinations.
