Jersey City is an unincorporated community and municipality in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 29,033 at the 2010 census. English colonists established a military post here as part of their conquest of North America; this outpost continued operations until 1764 when it merged with British forces at Fort George on the Delaware River into General John Burgoyne's army during the American Revolution under British general George Washington. When Bergen Township was abolished as part of Hunterdon County on April 30, 1907 – prior to becoming an incorporated municipality – Jersey City became its own separate municipal government beginning that day. As such, it continues today as one of New Jerseys' most diverse municipalities with a population that includes both residents from rural areas and those living near major metropolitan areas such as Manhattan and Philadelphia/Camden Yards among others In terms of economic activity, jersey city ranks third behind Newark and Camden along with being home to some prominent banking institutions including Jardin Securities Corporation (now Morgan Stanley), National Financial Group (now BankAtlantic), Prudential Insurance Company (formerly State Street) and Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company (later Wachtell Lambert). Construction began on the first phase of this scheme in 2004 but ran into problems due to lack of funding; however, Giuliani's plan remains popular with some residents because it offers them access to downtown amenities they can't find elsewhere within their municipality or within minutes' drive from their homes. In 2013–14, construction began on a second phase which will add 5 million square feet (480,000 m²) of commercial space along with 2 million square feet (20,000 m²) for residential use – making Jersey City one of the largest cities in North America fully developed as a commercial activity center. Since its incorporation as a borough on April 15th 1960 under state law 9:2-1 et seq., Jersey City has played ancentral role both politically and economically in Hudson County - witness its current status as one of only two municipalities located within 10 miles (16 km)of all three branches of New York State government - both federalist strongholds - while also providing important services such as public education; healthcare; law enforcement; municipal services; economic development; business incubation/financement opportunities;and more recently Housing Preservation Authority assistance program expansions throughout various wards throughout northern Hudson County through redevelopment efforts targeting underserved areas such as those near PATH train stations or inner-city neighborhoods where housing options are limited or nonexistent
