Jersey City, New Jersey is a city in and the county seat of Hudson County, New Jersey. The population was 553,711 as of the 2010 Census. It is the eighth-largest city in New Jersey and the third-largest in New York after Manhattan and Brooklyn. The metropolitan area has a population of 825,567. The history of Jersey City starts with Dutch settlers who founded what became today's Jersey City on September 8, 1624. They named it Nieuw Amsterdam because they arrived at that location during the height of Amsterdam's Golden Age. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1764 when Captain John Stevens and his men were landed there by Admiral George Washington during his expedition against Canada. A group of indentured Irishmen also settled here in 1764; they were known as "The Hibernians." The British burned down many homes on High Street in 1814 but did not damage or take away any crops or trees that grew near their settlement because these were Crown lands under British control at that time. In 1835, parts of this village (northwest corner now called Orange Street) became part of Bergen Township when that township was created from portions of Hudson County which had been organized from sections of Burlington Township (now East Rutherford). In 1847, an act was passed by the General Assembly to annex all except one block from Paramus to form what would become Newark am Montclair borough; however, this annexation plot never materialized because only 2/3rds of Paramus residents approved it! On March 14th 1860, Anthony Janssen leased 640 acres (2 km²) north east along the Hackensack River between Harrison Avenue (now Holland Avenue) and Essex Street for $1 per year to build a town site called Englewood which he named for his then fiancée Elizabeth Englewood – daughter-in-law of Sir Moses Montefiore. On October 15th 1861 while still living atEnglewood he married Miss Anna Maria Ridolfi; they moved into their new home on December 3rd 1861 and started building two stores - one on each side Court House Square - before finding enough tenants to create a full-time town government within 12 months! With such rapid growth and so few obstacles preventing them from becoming truly self-reliant as a town - including no streetlights until 1865 (!), wide open spaces for development (- large lots available until 1880), high school (1868 opened with 1st grade through Sixth grade students being educated here rather than attending public schools located elsewhere), excellent infrastructure including water services supplied by wells drilled beneath Englewood Heights - it can be seen how quickly Englewood became known throughout Ridgefield Township as "the Metropolis!"
