The Hopatcong Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. was organized in 1879 by Captain Chester W. Haines of the United States Marines at the request of a group of rifle and pistol enthusiasts who had gathered to pursue their hobby outdoors on Long Island. The club began meeting monthly at the home of Capt. John A. Bednar, a local farmer and member of the town board, until it moved to its current location in 1881. The first Ammunition Sales Meeting took place on October 14th, 1883 with 7 rounds being sold for $1 each. In 1901, the club purchased 10 acres of land at 303-307 Washington Avenue in Hopatcong for use as their shooting range which they named "Hoppitong". It remained an open air range until 1954 when it was converted into a gunnery school which still uses that name today. In 1916, Captain Harry Emshoff became president of the club and later served as honorary president from 1951-1957 while also holding other offices such as secretary and treasurer. In 1935, Captain Charles Cramer became president after serving for two years as vicepresident; he would remain in that role until his death in 1978. From 1951-1973 Drs Frederick Lucker (later Fredrickson) and Clifford Jablonski were both directors; during these years,Hopatcong Rifle & Pistol Club experienced many growths including adding an indoor range (1978), expanding our membership from 100 to 350 members (1971), becoming affiliated with the NJGRA (1976), hosting our first international competition (1981), becoming a separate 501c3 organization (1985), opening our own office(1993) while still using Capt Charles Cramer's house as their clubhouse office until 1999 when they moved into their new facility on Route 9 south of Hopatcong Township limits). / / /Since then we have developed several additional ranges including: -New Range:Acreage= TBD
Hopatcong, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,733 at the 2010 census. The name derives from the Hopewell word "hope" and "tongue." The land that now makes up Hopatcong was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. They named it Oosterwoude (Osterweld), after the farm of Oudolf van der Laan which they had located about two miles south of the present town site. In 1764, during the French and Indian War, British troops burned down a village near modern-day Hopatcong while on their march to Trenton. This event is mentioned in John Adams' letter tooston dated October 9, 1764: "the regiment reached Trenton this evening after burning three villages situated between ourselves and Princeton". In 1814, as part of the Third Great Awakening movement among American Protestants, George Whitefield preached at what is now known as Whitefield's Meetinghouse in Hopatcong. At this time, white people were beginning to move into areas that would become townships within Mercer County; thus Hopatcong was founded as an incorporated municipality on February 14th of that year. The town obtained its current name from a local stream (now known as Hope Creek) which served as its primary water supply until 1927 and then became aagricultural production center when numerous small breweries were built along Hope Creek Valley Road (now Route 29). In 1959, construction began on what would become Oneonta Airport - one of only two airports in New Jersey with runways measuring more than 3/4 mile long - making it one of the most important aviation centers in New York City during those years. That same year also saw opening of Quality Inn & Suites by Marriott inside Oneonta Township Hall before becoming Goodwill Industries' flagship motel chain across all eight states where they have operations including several locations within walking distance of Oneonta Airport including our own! In recent years we have seen other businesses come and go such as our very own post office which closed back in 2009 but has since been replaced by our new library which opened earlier this year!
