Hopatcong, New Jersey is a small town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It was formed from the merger of three villages: Hopatcong (First Township), Highland Park (Second Township), and North Hopatcong (Third Township). The area that now makes up Hopatcong was first settled by Europeans in the 17th century. The first European to settle in what is now Hopatcong was Nicholas Denison who arrived on horseback in 1678. He named the land "North Hopatcong", after his home village of Hopkins Falls, Nova Scotia. The township of Hopatcong was formed on March 12, 1838 based on land opened for purchase by commissioners under an act of the General Court of New Jersey. On February 14, 1839, it became a part of Union County. The population of the township grew rapidly during its early years and by 1860 it had reached 2,000 people. In 1876–77 a railroad track was built through the township from Hackensack to Trenton and as a result many farmers moved their operations to this new location which provided more access to markets and transportation than they could have otherwise managed without railroads. This development led to an increase in jobs for local residents as well as businesses throughout the town because transportation became more affordable and accessible than it had ever been before. During World War II much effort went into providing munitions storage facilities within town limits so that war material could be accumulated and stored safely until needed. Today there are still some remnants of these munitions Storage Facilities within town limits; however most activities currently taking place within town limits are related to economic development or services rendered by townsfolk themselves such as constituent services like police protection or garbage collection

Hopatcong was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey until the early 1800s. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century and by 1784, Hopatcong had a population of six people. The town developed around a mill that operated from 1789 to 1812. By 1813, there were only two dwellings and twelve families living in Hopatconngh. By 1840, there were ninety-six residents and the mill had been demolished. The first mention of Hopatcong is found in a deed from 16 November 1692 to John Myles for land at what is now known as College Drive and Second Street. The original proprietor of the land was Nicholas Ptee who granted it to Richard Ptee on 6 December 1692 for £5 per acre with an annual rent of £40 payable “to be paid out of his plantation”. One year later (1794), Nathaniel Harnett purchased land adjoining Richard Peete’s property which he sold to George Boudinot on 10 May 1794 for $2 per acre with an annual rent of $24 payable “out of his plantation laid down therein” In 1795, James Fenton purchased one-half interest in the Anthony Dormitories estate from Elias Howe for $5000 but failed to pay back his loan so it was sold back to him by Howe himself some time afterwards On 5 October 1800, Captain John Stevens landed at Old Bridgeport with supplies bound for Philadelphia after being called up by General George Washington during the War for Independence He tavern known as The Star became operational soon after this event and served as headquarters during Stevens's stay before he finally left on 5 November 1800 . On 15 October 1800, Captain John Stevens disembarked at Shipwreck Point (now Hopatcong) after spending several days ashore unable to find passage home due to bad weather conditions Captain John Stevens remained stationed here until 26 October 1800 when he sailed away again under escort flagship USS Constitution upon arriving back at Philadelphia Harbor
