Hopatcong, New Jersey is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,023 at the 2010 census. Hopatcong is located on the north-central edge of Middlesex County and is bordered by the towns of Sayreville and Holmdel to the east, Freehold Township to the south, and Monmouth County to the west. The name "Hopatcong" comes from an Iroquois word meaning "place where many buffaloes are grazing." The first European settlers in what is now Hopatcong were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. They named their community after a nearby mountain called "Happa'ton". The area that would become Hopatcong was first settled by Native Americans during the colonial period. In 1701, Englishman John Stevens explored and mapped what would become Middlesex County. Stevens named two settlements after himself – West Tisbury (later East Tisbury) and Northampton (now Northumberland). These settlements were respectively called Lyme or Old Lyme and East Lyme or Middlebury. In 1709, George Washington's army fought its way through New Jersey on their way down to Yorktown. As they passed through Hopatconnght, they left behind a military road which later became known as Route 44/Route 79. In 1814, when Middlesex County was created from parts of Essex County, part of Hopatcong lay within it. The town had no incorporation until 1851 when it voted to become one of five towns in Middlesex County that year under pressure from residents of Sayreville and Holmdel who wanted more acreage for themselves because of their growing population densities. By 1860, however, most residents had moved away due to poor economic conditions attendant with war fever ravaging Europe at this time; by 1870 only about 60% of original citizens remained in town while over 90% lived outside its boundaries within Middlesex County proper. When consolidation took place with HunterdonCounty on February 14th 1876 all but four outlying villages including Hopatconnght seceded into Hunterdon Township effective January 1st following an election campaign slogan "We want our own village!" The remaining few villagers set up shop around a millstream known locally as Snyders' Pond until eventually abandoned during World War II when much farmland became available for development outside town limits due to wartime restrictions on housing developments . Today there are several former residences still standing around Snyders' Pond although most have been vacated for other uses such as private homes or businesses . In 1834, it became a part of Hopkinton Township. It was established as a borough on April 15, 1888 and incorporated as a city on December 5, 1923. As of the 2010 census, its population was 31,912. The history of Hopatcong began with the Dutch colonists who arrived in what is now Hopatcong in 1664. They were the first Europeans to set foot in what is now Hopatcong Township and they were followed by the British in 1701 after they landed at Cape May County. The British abandoned their colony at Yorktown near Newark during the American Revolution and all but two families from Holland returned home with them instead of continuing on to America. The first town site that was chosen for settlement by Jamestown settlers was called Westville because it lay west of the Delaware River between Huntingdon Valley and Easton Manor. However, due to concerns about Native Americans living near settlements located within German territory northwest of Philadelphia (then known as Northumberland), settlers renamed their new town Hopkinton because that is where John Hopkins had lived before he moved to Pennsylvania in 1684 to join forces with Leicester brothers against James II’s forces during the English Civil War (1688-1690). In 1796, when Burlington Township split into two parts based on political lines following the Revolutionary War, Hopkinton became one of those two townships within Burlington Township proper. On April 15th, 1888, it adopted its present name –Hopatcong – after being designated as an official UDC City by then Mayor Edward Fenton Jr.. As an officially incorporated city underNJ State law (pursuant to Act 181/24), hopatcong enjoyed many benefits which included: full voting rights; ability to establish ordinances; taxing power; fire protection; street cleaning authority; and financial resources which allowed for ambitious planning initiatives such as creating a downtown district complete with sidewalks and public transportation options like buses and trains! During World War II, hopetongnijh experienced some significant growth due largely to wartime manufacturing opportunities related to military production plants located throughout New Jersey including Rubbermaid Company’s Paramus plant which made rubber goods for both food service providers such as Dunkin Donuts restaurants across America and also war materiel such as tanks and guns!
