Hopatcong is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. The name of the town derives from an Anacondan word meaning "place where people collect ants." Hopatcong is located on the border of Middlesex and Union counties. The first Europeans to visit Hopatcong were Dutch traders in 1624. In 1881, Colonel John Fenton purchased land in Hopatcong from Elias Howe for $2,500; he named it Fentonown after himself and his family. In 1887, George Sanger bought land east of what is now Hopatcong for $4,000; he named it Sangertown after himself and his son-in-law George W. Sanger (1837–1925). In 1903, the Asbury Park Press newspaper published an article about a group of men who had discovered oil near Hopatcong Creek Reservoir; they called themselves "theaders". On July 2nd, 1903, two rigs belonging to Standard Oil Company were sunk off the coast of Brightwaters Beach by a storm that caused oil to seep out from under them. This event became known as the "Hopatcong Oil Disaster". Soon afterward, Henry Clay Frick (1860–1948) donated some land to the borough to create Frick Park which contains many factories dating back to World War I along with large residential areas today including: Northgate Mall and Frick Tower apartments across from Southgate Shopping Center. In 1951 Borough President James Kapp introduced a resolution naming Hopatcong Borough Headquarters Building in honor of Congressman Joseph Crowley who represented New Jersey's 7th Congressional District during that year's midterm elections. On October 28th 1948 Mayor James Jaffe presented legislation designating a day each year throughout all five boroughs in commemoration of World War II veterans who served with distinction elsewhere within those jurisdictions - September 11th being this year's date - as National Veterans Day . On November 15th 1950 Borough President Harry Ziegler presented legislation designating December 6th as Dick Raymond Day in memory of local firefighter Dick Raymond (1927–1995) whose life tragically ended on December 3rd following a car accident while responding to an emergency call

Hopatcong is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. As of the 2015 Census, Hopatcong had an estimated population of 9,916. The town was first settled in 1764 by Dutch settlers as part of the then-unorganized Monmouth County. It became a borough on May 15, 1908. The community is located on the eastern edge of Monmouth County and includes most of the Hopatcong Township and much of the present-day townships of Bedminster and East Brunswick. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, Hopatcong's borough status does not affect its voting power within the New Jersey Legislature; all residents are allowed to vote in Borough Council elections regardless their borough status. The name "Hopatcong" is from Native American word "hopahkonah". The meaning is "place where they gather flowers." In 1764, Dutch settlers arrived in what is now Monmouth County and named it Yarmouth after his ship HMS Yarmouth which got stuck off Long Island during wintertime with no way to get back home. They built a small village known as Weequahic (now Westville) on land that still lay undeveloped today near where Hopatcong stands today and started gathering wildflowers for sale to other colonists who lived further down Long Island Sound. In 1802 when Europeans began exploring North America they found this area and named it after their new colony at Jamestown on James River – Hopatcong being one mile distant from James City Road as it was then known (the modern routing of James City Road leads through Somerset). This early name suggests that hop vines were used locally for cultivation hereabouts as well – huckleberries are only found in Maine and upstate New York while wild grapes can be found throughout Ohio’s Western interior (but not along James River), so there must have been some connection there too! It would take another couple hundred years before hops became a major crop hereabouts with processing facilities set up starting about 1890 – these days Hops Unlimited produces both fresh hop crops like blueberry bushes/strawBERries etc., beer malt syrup & flour for bread making etc., just about everything related to hops! And yes those same hop plants we see growing outside today were once harvested right here at our local Stadium farmstead… such busy times eh? But back to our story….. By 1907 all vestiges of Weequahic had been destroyed by fire & thus began what would become known as “Hopatonaugh Township” including modern day Hopatcong itself! But even though this township was created primarily around hops production (& still boasts many hectare acres left cultivated this way!), none of its residents could actually call themselves “hopsters” until 1951 (!), when codename 2187 was chosen for neighboring East Brunswick due to its high concentration or “hops” per capita! So finally we come fullcircle & you can officially say that your favorite cold glass Hopsateague Pilsner $4 has ancestry ties back TO…Hopatenaug township #2187
