The first recorded use of a gun in Hopatcong was on November 11, 1775 when Captain John Smith used his rifle to kill a deer. The town began prohibitionist activity in the early 1800s and passed an ordinance in 1819 forbidding the carrying of firearms without a license. In 1825, the Town Council passed an ordinance forbidding any person under the age of twenty-one from owning or using a gun. In 1871, Hopatcong became part of Union Township and passed an ordinance prohibiting handguns. In 1898, Union Township was reorganized as Hopatcong Township and adopted a handgun ban. In 1906, Union Township Passed an ordinance amending its handgun ban to allow open carry of handguns by individuals over 21 years old with a valid permit from their municipality or agency if they are considered “a peace officer” within the meaning of state law. In 1912, Hopatcong became part of Essex County and adopted an ordinance amendment legalizing open carry by individuals over 21 years old with a valid permit from their municipality or agency if they are considered “a peace officer” within the meaning of state law. Open Carry became prohibited statewide in New Jersey in 1978 pursuant to then-Governor Christie's executive order (Executive Order No. 78-10).
Hopatcong, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 41,874. The name derives from Hopatcong Creek. The first European to explore and map the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1764 and 1765 were fought two wars between Great Britain and France over control of this region. The British captured Hopatcong but lost because they could not find any trade goods that would be worth defending against French attacks on their home soil. The community was founded in 1814 by farmers who raised corn and other crops near what is now Route 9A (now US Route 1). By 1860, there were 180 people living in Hopatcong Township; by 1920 it had grown to 553 residents. Prior to World War II, Hopatcong's manufacturing base included paper products such as printing presses and packing cases for automobiles In 1945 local radio station WNEW began broadcasting from a temporary transmitter site on farm property east of town; it later moved to its current location on High Street in 1966 After being vacant for years following its closure by banks during the Great Recession,HopatconnGazetteLtd.,anewcommercialbusinessopenedin December2012andhasbeenthetown'smainstewardesspecimenoftheyear sofar.Thetown has also become known for its annual Pumpkinfest which is held on October 25th each year at township Park

Hopatcong was once a thriving community that sprawled across over twenty acres of land in what is now the town of Hopatcong, New Jersey. The community thrived due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its rich mineral resources. In 1825, when the first post office was established in Hopatcong, it had a population of just six people. By 1860, however, the community had grown to nearly ninety individuals and was considered one of the most prosperous in central New Jersey. The town's fortunes changed during the American Civil War. After Union forces captured Hopatcong on July 9, 1862, they began reconstruction efforts which led to new construction and an increase in population. During this time, Hopatcong became known as "the Athens of Central New Jersey." Despite this success, however, HopatCONGHTOWN hit hard during World War II when military leaders decided to build airfields in the area for bombing raids against Germany. This caused extensive damage to both the town's infrastructure and its residents who were forced to flee their homes. Today, Hopatcong remains a small but vibrant community with a rich history that has been passed down from generation to generation. The town has many notable landmarks including its Vineyard Hall Museum which features exhibits about local agriculture and history; its Old School House; and its hop shop which is still open today!
The first settlers in Hopatcong were Dutch. They arrived in 1682 and began to farm the land. The area was part of Jersey City until it was annexed by New York in 1898. From then on, the town continued to grow as a result of its connection to New York City. In 1924, Hopatcong became an incorporated village and has since been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area.
