Hopatcong, New Jersey is a town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey on the border of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. Hopatcong is one of five towns in Middlesex County that are part of the Princeton-on-Hudson metropolitan area. The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Hopatcong were Dutch colonists who came by way of Elizabethtown in 1664. When William Paterson became governor of New Jersey in 1702, he decided to make the town his seat and named it after his native province of Holland. In 1705, the first post office was established in Hopatcong with three inhabitants. The village growth continued during the 18th century as more farmers arrived and began to sell their produce aroundHopatcong square. In 1793, when Colonel James Clinton bought 1/2 township from Samuel Wigglesworth for £1,000, he laid out streets which still run through hopetongue today: Prospect Ave., Clinton Ave., Orange St., Drury Lane (now Market St.), Green St., and Pearl St.. On November 8th 1794, President George Washington visited Hopatconnig while on his tour of America and noted that “a very fine prospect” could be seen for development there should this land become available again as organized township form within contemporary society - an idea which would later be realized with Princeton Township when it was created from parts of Hopatcong Township on January 1st 1876. On December 5th 1800 United States Congress passed act creating a new county called Middlesex using land east of Elizabethtown including all present-day Hopatcong Township except for a small piece lying southwesterly near Route 22 known then as "Old Fort Hill". This act also provided for creationof Princeton Borough within Middlesex County based on sections taken from both Hopatcong Township and Old Fort Hill lands along Rte 22 between Elizabethtown Road (now Route 34)and Livingston Avenue (now Routes 38 & 44). Hopatcong is part of the Camden-Haddon Heights-Easton, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Hopatcong were the Lenape Native Americans who founded a village on the west side of creek that flows through town today. The Dutch established a trading post and fishing ground in 1684 near present day Hopatcong. In 1814, General George Washington's army passed through town while on their way to Trenton and camped near what is now Spring Lake Park. A few years later, the Morris Canal was built which connected New York City with Philadelphia via Hopatcong Creek. This event led to more people moving into the area and made it an important center for trade and commerce during this time period. In 1794, British troops burned down one of the small villages in central Hopatcong Township but villagers rebuilt quickly as Methodists began settling there soon after. They named their new village "Hopatcong" after nearby Haddonfield Township where they had also been living since before English settlers arrived in South Jersey during that time period. Eventually most of these early settlers left for better opportunities in other parts of New Jersey due to economic hardship brought about by Revolutionary War warfare and lack of farmland elsewhere in America after England collapsed financially from its war effort against France. But many of these original pioneers did stay behind and started building homes around what is now Spring Lake Park until World War II when most residents moved away because of increased wartime production demands or simply because they could no longer support themselves following America's entry into World War II (WWII). It wasn't until 1954 whenHopatcong Borough became a separate municipality within Union County when all township municipalities were given local government status under state law that provided more control over municipal finances and services within their borders (i.e., less reliance on State funding) although some public services still remain available statewide such as education which remainsprovided exclusively by county taxpayers through school districts outside Camden/Haddon Heights/Easton metropolitan areas like ours.) .
