The Hopatcong Township Gun Light Historical Society was founded in 1936. The society is dedicated to preserving the history ofHopatcong Township and its gun lights. One of the earliest gun lights in Hopatcong Township was a five-foot by three-foot light that hung from a tree near the intersection of Route 9 and South Main Street. This light allowed residents to see approaching cars and provide warning against robbers or other criminals. In 1938, a new type of gun light was installed in the township. This light was known as a “gun car” because it consisted of two metal plates that were attached to each other with straps. This type of light allowed citizens to see inside their own car when driving on public roads. In 1951, an additional gun light was added to the township. Thislight consistedof four metal plates that were attached to each other with straps. This type of light allowed citizens to view inside their own house when they were outside performing chores or going about their day-to-day activities. In 1957, another new type of gun light was installed in the township.Thislight consistedof two metal plates that were attached to each other with straps and ropes.This type oflight allowed citizens to view inside their own home while they slept or while they were watching television at night. The Hopatcong Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1876. It was the first gun club in town. The club met at the home of General John A. Logan, who donated the land for the clubhouse.

Hopatcong is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,524 as of the 2010 Census. Hopatcong is located on the southern edge of Middlesex County and is bordered to the east by Rahway and to the west by Sayreville. The area now known as Hopatcong was first settled in 1839 by Dutch farmers who named it Vlachtendamme after their farmstead in that year. The first permanent residents were Germans who arrived during the American Civil War and established a farm called "Grosse Beeren" (Big Beers). In 1868, a group of Englishmen from Morris Township immigrated to Hopatcong and began farming land which they named "Hopatcong". The community attained its current name in 1904 when local officials voted to change its name to commemoration of John Soper, an early settler. In 1945, Hopatcong became one of only two towns in New Jersey to become evacuee-prone due to World War II bombings. After beingBombed on September 11th 2001, the town's economy plummeted and it experienced significant poverty until 2006 when it regained some stability with help from new businesses such as KFC Landmark Farms & Village Center and Wells Fargo Banknorth Park Plaza. Today, Hopatcong is home to many businesses including: KFC Landmark Farms & Village Center; Wells Fargo Banknorth Park Plaza; PNCBank (formerly JP Morgan Chase); Verizon Wireless; Dunkin' Donuts; Chipotle Mexican Grill; Subway; Applebee's restaurants; Holiday Inn Express hotels - all operated out of former KFC Landmark Farms & Village Center locations which reopened following reconstruction efforts begun after Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012. Additionally, there are several farms within walking distance including: Dandelion Nursery & Farm Museum open daily 9 am - 4 pm for tours/views of flowers starting at $2 per person or $5 for adults or children 12 years or younger with a guardian; Wildflower Gardens open daily 10 am - 4 pm for hikes/botanical walks starting at $3 per person or $7 for adults or children 12 years or younger with a guardian.; Giant Easton Organic Garden open monthly 10 am - 6 pm admission free with purchase of tickets good for 3 days next visit.; The Playground located just off Route 202 across from PNCBank offers programs like " Dino Day" where kids can play outside all day long while learning about dinosaurs from Carefully Foraged program educatorsfrom nearby Monmouth University.; And much more!

Hopatcong is a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South Brunswick–Middletown, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hopatcong was founded by English settlers in 1777 as a farming community on the south bank of the Raritan River. The town became an important stop on the Erie Canal and developed into an agricultural center with rich colonial heritage. Hopatcong was incorporated as a village in 1872 and again as a town in 1918. The current name comes from a Native American word meaning "across from" or "nearby." The beginning of Hopatcong's history can be traced back to 1777 when English settlement began along the south bank of the Raritan River. Many of these early colonists were displaced during fighting between British and Indian forces during America's Revolutionary War. French Huguenots who had fled France arrived in this area soon after independence was declared, and they too played an important role in developing Hopatcong as a farming community. In 1872, local residents voted to incorporation as a village under the name Albion Heights while provisional boundaries were still being drawn up for what would become Monmouth County. On May 5 that year, final boundaries were set which created one of New Jersey's most populous towns - Hopatcong had grown to 2,000 people by 1875! The first municipal election held under new township government occurred on November 3 that year with all incumbents re-elected unopposed! By 1920, however, township officials decided that villages should no longer be governed by popular vote but rather by board of trustees appointed by Township President! This system served the township well until it was abolished following World War II when townships became county-level entities within New Jersey! During its earliest years, Hopatcong experienced some trouble due to its location adjacent to two large military encampments - Fort Washington on the north side ofriver and Fort Lee on opposite banks upstream - both used for training troops during America's Revolutionary War period. One such skirmish took place February 14th 1779 when three militiamen from Fort Washington were killed and four wounded when they tried to cross over into nearby Weehawken Creek en route to their barracks at fortify their town against attack from Indians! In later years though tensions dissipated somewhat thanks to good relations between Dutch farmers living nearby and British troops quartered near Fort Washington (who also used Weehawken Creek for bathing). In fact so friendly did these interactions eventually become that clothing shortages led one British officerto remark '[t]here are not enough Dutch troopers about here... you must get them if you want us tough'." However another incident involving militia members from Fort Washington did occur October 10th 1800 resulting in one soldier killed and three wounded; this incident came after some stores located close to fortifications were looted although no anyone was arrested! According to historian Donald Klinells: "It is understandable why early residents may have felt uneasy about these [military] presence; many soldiers had been landed forcibly upon our shores just before independence". As time passed though resident attitudes slowly changed towards military activity becoming more supportive ultimately leading to less confrontations between militiamen and civilians occurring than previously presumed...this positive trend continued until after America entered World War II". Consequently hostilities ceased altogether within weeks following Pearl Harbor which left much of northeastern NJ undefended!! Most notably there have been several incidents throughout history where civilian casualties resulted due either directly or indirectly from combat operations taking place near/inhabitants primarily along I-95 corridor encompassing both townships including those near Route 66 exit 12 & 15!!! mere coincidence? Hardly!!

The town of Hopatcong, New Jersey was founded in 1760 by John and Mary Hopatcong. The community was originally named "Teaneck." The name change came about due to the fact that at the time Teaneck was located in Sussex County, New Jersey and Hopatcong was located in Middlesex County.
