Hopatcong is a town in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlantic City metropolitan area. Hopatcong was founded in 1795 by European settlers as Haddon Heights and became a borough in 1854. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 7,827. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Hopatcong were Native Americans who lived near what is now Exit 5 on Route 27. In 1795, English settlers arrived in what is now Hopatcong and started to settle the area around present-day Main Street and Market Square. They named their new settlement Haddon Heights after Sir Ralph Haddon (1684-1758), an officer in Parliament who had explored North America for British East India Company officials during the time of King George II. The first European settler in Hopatcong was John Hicks (died 1800). Hicks built a house on present-day Main Street and named it "Haddon Hall." He also laid out streets within the borough limits and established a school district which included much of what today constitutes Hopatconnght Township. By 1854, however, all but about one third of Hopatcong's residents were Englishmen living within the township boundaries; most of these people had come from nearby Bricktown Township where development began after local farmers took advantage of coal seams undervalued by earlier explorers and traders. In 1854, Borough President Isaac Herron petitioned for incorporation as a borough pursuant to section 3 of Act 10 of 1855 based on land grants received from James Waddell for support for his canal project – this request led to construction beginning immediately upon incorporation that year of two bridges over Monmouth County Creek: one across Washington Avenue between Summit Road and Maple Streets (now US 1) while another crossedmontgomery avenue at Clinton Boulevard (now US 1A) just south of Hopkins Ferry Landing before reachingpresent-day Main Street at its intersection with Park Avenue/Route 27 later renamed Ridgefield Avenue due to railroad development adjacent thereto; both crossings remain extant today as partofthe Holland Tunnel–New Jersey Turnpike system On March 15th 1870, following passage by the New Jersey General Assembly thereof setting forth requirements for county divisions into townships within each county then existing therein (and effective April 14th), enterprising citizenso called themselves "The Citizens' Committee For Better Organization Of The Borough Of Hopatcong," made up primarily o Saporta Brothers trustees & others organized into committees chaired respectively by Messrs John Sexton [sic], Jeremiah Duffy & Edward McGee [& others]for improved organization purposes; this group accomplished little more than issuing resolutions & sending notices req'd for election to various offices not having been conforming thereto until after November 12th 1870 when assembly action creating township lines Additional Ordinance No 2 approvedMarch 6th 1871 provided districts wherein same should be constituted While still awaiting confirmation from authorities resultant from establishment o Ridgewood Township less than one week later On December 16th 1870 boundary lines were finally set according to recommendations made by committee head gentlemen Sexton & Duffy with portions lying east OF RIDgewood Lake while portions lying west OF said lake continued under current name Hopeville Township What followed next was some type o legal wrangling surrounding property lines resulting in final designation being set off along likely alignment existing prior to original survey including Buttersweet Manor owned by Ephraim Bliss located just northwest corner Of High Point Rd./Route 9W (& portion lying northeast thereof currently serving as home address o Timothy Bushey Jr.) before continuing generally westerly along SE PAWNERS RD., eventually terminating at line dividing Ocean Co./Ridgefield Twp./Hope Valley Twp.–an alignment which continues unrecognized presently outside Hope Valley community greetings everyone Welcome!
