The Hopatcong Township of New Jersey was formed in 1838 and is located in the southeastern corner of the state. The township covers an area of 61.8 square miles and had a population of 4,711 as of the 2010 census. The township is bordered by Middlesex County to the north, Union County to the east, Sussex County to the south, and Monmouth County to the west. The township's motto is "Erectus ego sum", which means "I am erect." The first European settlers in Hopatcong were Dutch people who arrived in 1626. They built a small cabin on what is now Post Road. In 1795, United States troops attacked British soldiers stationed at Presbyterian Church on Long Island and looted their cannons. A group of farmers from Hopatcong helped repel the Americans and were rewarded with land grants that included portions of present-day Hopatcong Township. In 1838, a group of Englishmen arrived in New Jersey and established themselves near Princeton Junction. They named their new community Princeton after George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation near Princeton, Virginia. When they left Princeton for good in 1843, they took with them some Dutch residents who had moved there during their stay. In 1868, when Hopatcong Township was organized, it included parts of present-day Middlesex and Union Counties as well as most of Sussex and Monmouth Counties except for part within present-day Union County which was later incorporated into Delaware County. The township adopted its current name on April 12th, 1938 following approval by voters during a special election held that year to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Princeton Junction development which happened just one year earlier Hopatcong became an official municipality on December 15th 1984 after being granted full municipal status by Governor James Kapp et al.. On July 1st 2009 Borough Mayor Tom McGowan announced plans for annexation by Camden City University - effective September 1st 2009 - thus making Hopatconn fully city annexed within Camden City Limits

Hopatcong was founded in 1795 by Dutch farmers, who named it after the town of Haarlem in Holland. The township was established on the east bank of the Hackensack River, about 12 miles northwest of Paterson. In 1812, Hopatcong became a part of New Jersey and was renamed for General George Washington. In 1868, Hopatcong was incorporated as a borough. On March 14, 1938, it merged with Paterson to form the current municipality of Paterson. The population of Hopatcong at that time was 10,711. The first store in Hopatcong opened its doors in 1815. By 1830, there were eight stores in the township and two tanneries. The first post office operated from 1818 to 1840; it is now located in Borough Hall. The first school was built at what is now Pine Street and Spring Avenue in 1820; it is now called Borough High School. A new schoolhouse replaced the old one on State Street in 1850; it is now known as First Presbyterian Church (Borough). In 1860, three brothers started a flour mill on Broad Street; today's Jamestown Mill also produces flour products. The sisters who ran this mills also raised chickens and produced eggs from their produce until 1915 when they switched to corn production which continues to this day as part of their business
The town of Hopatcong was founded in 1795 by farmers from the area around Bordentown. The first post office was established in 1807, and the first store opened in 1834. The population of Hopatcong peaked at over 1000 in 1919, but has since shrunk to about 350 residents.
