In 1868–69, George Eastman founded Rochester Manufacturing Company which manufactured phonograph disks for Edison Radio Corporation starting business at 532 Broad Street later renamed Chambers Street before moving its operations to 117 Pearl Street where it continued production into the early 1920s under different management including those of Edward Rowntree who ran it into bankruptcy during World War I; Archibald MacLeish who served as its General Manager; and David Rockefeller who purchased it from Eastman for $2 million in 1926. Hoboken, New Jersey is a city in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,826 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Mercer County after Camden. Its nickname "The City of Light" comes from the light show at Oneonta Avenue and Broadway in downtown Hoboken. The area that would become Hoboken was first settled by Dutch and English colonists who arrived in 1664. In 1714, John Moore, an agent for the British Crown under George II of Great Britain, granted land to Nicholas Davenport and Samuel Menard for their inventive work on a waterwheel called the Moore-Davenport Wheel which turned on an axle located near what is now First Street and Eighth Avenue in downtown Hoboken. The first known resident of what would become Hoboken was Peter Minuit who established a trading post there in 1698 with his brother-in-law Cornelius Van Der Velde. By 1800,Prior to its incorporation as a city on April 14th, 1824 by an act of the state legislature, Hoboken had only 6 residents and consisted mostly of farmssteads around Second and Third Streets east of Market Street. In 1828 Nathaniel Weare founded Weare's Millinery Store on Broadwalk across from what is now Bankers Hall (now part of State University). This became one of the most important businesses in town; it continues to be headquartered there today. In 1851 Abraham Lincoln visited Hoboken while he was running for president; he stopped at Weare's Millinery Store before continuing on to another stop later that day at Park Row Arcade where he delivered some speeches before returning home. In 1863 Union General Ulysses S Grant visited town while troops were attacking Confederate forces entrenched along Johnson Boulevard east of Seventh Street; this event helped lead to the Battle of Newark Bridge which resulted in more than 50 deaths among both sides involved
