Over time much of what makes Highland Park so unique has grown out of its location close to major city centers like Newark and Paterson but also because of its rich history which can be found throughout its neighborhoods including Glen Ridge (the original name for Highlands), Springdale (originally called Spring Garden), Hillsborough Heights, Willingboro Township and even down into Little Falls Township where there are still small villages dotting the landscape. In 1850, when New Jersey began issuing Birth Certificates with photograph cards instead of just written descriptions like they do today, Highland Park became one of the first towns in America to get this service. At that time many people wantedto move away from cities because they felt they were becoming more polluted each day due to manufacturing plants located near them. Residents wanted a chance to have their own say about how their town should be run so they founded a Board of Education which still meets monthly today although membership currently dwindles since most residents have moved away or retired). Many important decisions made during those early years included setting up streetlights and building roads inside the town limits! Today's economy is based largely on healthcare services provided by assorted clinics within walking distance or less than 1 mile radius including Presbyterian Hospital which opened in 1979 as one of only two hospitals statewide dedicated exclusively to medical care for pregnant women; Mount Sinai Medical Center - another hospital focused exclusively on medical care for pregnant women; St Vincent’s HealthCare System - home health agencies that provide personal care services as well as overnight hospice care; Aspinwall Nursing Home – an all-female nursing home with over 100 beds providing supportive services such as laundry assistance; Allentown Eye Care – provides vision correction services;and Raritan Valley Regional Medical Center - offers general surgery outpatient service as well as internal medicine outpatient service across seven floors with pediatrician/obstetrician/ gynecologist offices on five floors along with cardiology office and Radiology Department which offers several types of imaging equipment including MRI’s etc.. Residents also continue business activities such as funeral homes (Cemetery Services), pet groomers (Petsmart), real estate agents (Middlesex Realtors) and web development companies (Eagle Street Solutions). Some businesses that have closed include: IGA Supermarkets / Grocery Stores (.50 cents per pound average sales); JCPenney (.75 cents per pound average sales); Atlantic City Pizza Joint (.75 cents per pound average sales) ; Petco (-5% volume increase each month since October 2009); Sears (-5% volume increase each month since October 2009); Hess Brothers Paper Merchants (-10% volume increase each month since October 2009)

The township Coverdales tract at the mouth of Hackensack River and consisted of 216 acres (87 hectares). The first settler was James McDonald. In 1886, Highland Park had a population of 2,000 people and it was considered to be one of the most affluent townships in New Jersey. In 1922, Highland Park purchased land from the borough of Paramus for $5 million. In 1957, Highland Park became an incorporated municipality with a population of 13,878. The boroughs of Paramus and Westwood merged into Highland Park in 1965. In 1998, HighlandsPark received a grant from the NJ State Development Authority to develop a $30 million mixed-income housing project known as "The Village". The development is located on donated property between Route 22 and Summit Avenue in Parsippany Township and is designed by architecture firm Wright + Partners LLP.
