Highland Park is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Trenton metropolitan area. Highland Park was founded on October 15, 1836 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a farming and lumber community. The townspeople built their first homes in 1840. Highland Park became an incorporated municipality on April 15, 1914. The name "Highland Park" comes from the highlands that overlook it and were once used by Scots-Irish farmers to raise cattle and sheep. The first settler in Highland Park was John Macdonald who arrived in 1836 from Scotland with his family. He built a cabin near what is now Exit 17 of I-95 and started trading goods with Indians for horses, livestock, and other items he needed to farm his land. In 1840, Scottish immigrant James Lowrance settled in Highland Park after coming over on the "Queen's Ships." Lowrance operated a store and post office here until 1849 when he sold his property to John Haddon for $1/acre (or $40/year). In 1860s two brothers - Alexander Macdonald & Angus MacDonald - purchased much of what remains of Haddon's original holdings including most of the present day village of Highland Park from him or others involved in their purchase including their father-in-law Donald MacDonald Sr.. They developed the village into one of northern Jersey's most thriving towns during the late 19th century due to its access to markets abroad as well as its location between Newark Liberty International Airport and Trenton Junction Railway Station making it easy to get around town while still having plenty of amenities available such as an opera house (the first show being presented there), several churches (including St Samson Catholic Cathedral which served as meeting place for township officials until 1946), schools (grades preK through 8th grades were offered at four different locations including Mrkton Schoolhouse which served students until 1959), hospitals (the only one then located within town limits) as well Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church which opened its doors on December 3rd 1870 despite opposition from some residents who saw it as an intruder onto their business territory; this church would become known nationally for playing a role in helping lead America into World War II The Village continued thrive during prohibition years with many businesses existing beyond alcohol sales thanks to prohibitionist Mayor Edward Ahern who refused to enforce Prohibition laws even though he personally made millions doing so After Prohibition ended following WORLD WAR II began many new businesses moved into the Town including supermarkets such as Kroger & Safeway followed by restaurants such as Pabst Brewing Company & Wawa Pizza before becoming medical clinics like liver transplant center Broadview Medical Center while also taking over properties vacated by liquor stores .Ahern Place eventually become home to Verizon Wireless Headquarters prior to finally being demolished in 2013 when company relocated back out west
