Highland Park is a township in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,596 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The Township was established on March 14th, 1812 and was named for General James Montgomery (1763-1841), who fought in the American Revolutionary War and later served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention that created the United States of America. The first settler in Highland Park, John Prentice, arrived in 1798 and built his home on what is now Pine Avenue. In 1824, when Highland Park was formed from parts of Southwick Township, it had a population of only 4 people. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Highland Park. Highland Park became an incorporated municipality on November 2nd of that year with a population of 2614. On October 15th of 1961 Highland Park announced they would be moving from their original town site to make way for new development in what is now called North Camden Yards section of Philadelphia Eagles Stadium which currently houses 76ers games as well as other large venues like Lincoln Financial Field and Wells Fargo Center among others. On April 1st 2017 Mayor Jim Kenney announced plans to close down all but one lane on Route 22 between Broad Street/Southwestern Boulevard and Dickinson Avenue due to increased traffic congestion caused by recent construction projects along this stretch including new lanes for I-95 Expansion Project associated with Penn Station project as well as planned extensions of Harnett Street eastward through North Camden Yards section into NortheastPhiladelphia sections towards University City section along with two other major projects viz; widening Front Street from two lanes wide near intersection with Roosevelt Road to four lanes wide near intersection with Delaware Avenue will create significant traffic backups during peak hours which are further compounded by existing conditions consisting mostly non-existent shoulder widths along both routes making it difficult or impossible for drivers to merge onto either side without having to cross multiple lines creatinglane conflicts thereby exacerbating already existing problems resulting in long periods before any significant change can be made leading eventually to increased congestion during morning rush hour not just adjacent to Penn Station but also adjacent communities such as Easton where transportation infrastructure has been stalled since 2013 due largely to lack funding despite promises by Governor Tom Wolf
