The first settler was Nicholas Hahn and his family who arrived from Germany in 1795. The name of the park came about due to its location on high ground near what is now known as Highland Avenue and Old Dutch Road. In 1812, John Dunkerly founded Dunkerly & Company mill here which became one of the largest flour mills in America. It closed in 1865 However, Dunkerly's son, John Pendergast Dunkerly remained active until his death in 1898; he donated land for what is now called Highland Park Cemetery. The town was originally part of Rahway Township but became its own municipality on March 7, 1909 with a total population of 10,000 people. On July 1st 1912, portions of Rahway Township were annexed into Highland Park and along with it more than 4 thousand acres (16 km²) of forested land forming what is now known as Highland Park Forest Preserve. In 1926-27 William Haddonfield built a dam across the Raritan River that created Lake Highlands reservoir; when completed it formed the nucleus for today's community by creating an artificial lake which filled up with rainwater runoff during heavy downpours that occurred annually during summertime throughout Morris County On October 15th 1922 nine residents removed 92 feet (35 m) of granite from atop Montclair Tower – one of many feats accomplished by local schoolchildren during their homecoming parade that day across Morris County – sending a message to Governor James Molloy telling him not to build a new state capital without consulting them first In 1951 Highland Park voters passed a resolution endorsing creation of an urban area within the township including Highland Park Village; this village would become reality less than two years later when Morristown Township granted official status to Highlands Borough on November 3rd 1954 .
