Highland Park is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,624 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is home to several universities and colleges as well as many professional businesses and homes. The city's location on the Hackensack River makes it an important economic center for the region. The first settlements in what is now Highland Park were made by farmers of Dutch descent who arrived in 1728. By 1812, there were over 200 people living in the area. In 1838, Highland Park was incorporated as a borough. In 1861, it became a city and was renamed after Lord Highland of Scotland who had helped bring about independence from Great Britain. In 1954, the City of Highland Park merged with adjacent Pleasantville to form the current municipality which has been governed by a mayor and five-member City Council since then. The current mayor is Sheila Oliveri-Davis with term expiring at year's end 2020. In 2016, Highland Park underwent a $31 million makeover that saw new streetscape improvements such as new sidewalks, more public Art Gallery spaces including an art museum dedicated to local history and art education opportunities for all ages including programming specific to young minds through arts marketing programs; renovated infrastructure including new schools (2 elementary/1 middle school), updated fire hydrants/pumps/sewer systems (including one located right outside Mayor’s office!), renewable energy installtion addition; conversion of two old Chicagos into affordable housing units; construction of new parks (one near former train station site) – making this year’s makeover one of our most ambitious ever!

Highland Park is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,534 at the 2010 census. Highland Park was formed on March 14, 1868 from parts of Harrison Township and Westwood Township. Highland Park is located in the eastern part of Bergen County and is bordered by Middlesex County to the south and east, Passaic County to the north, and Atlantic City to the west. The name "Highland Park" originated from two places in Pennsylvania: Highland Township in Huntingdon County and Highland Heights in Berks County. In 1868, portions of Harrison Township were annexed into Highland Park while Westwood Township remained separate as a township. The original settlers who founded what would become Highland Park were farmers who had come overlanders from western Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. They built their homes around a mill which they operated until it was destroyed by fire in 1875. The settlers who continued to live there after the mill's destruction started building houses on what later became North Avenue which runs through today's town center. That same year, they also erected a schoolhouse on Easton Road which still stands today as one of only two remaining examples of its kind in America at that time. The first post office for Highland Park was established on North Avenue in 1876. It served residents of both village and townships until 1940 when it moved to its current location near Asbury Drive and Roosevelt Boulevard. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson visited Highlands park during his visit to New Jersey and pronounced it "the most beautiful place I have ever seen". He also said that if he could recommend one thing about America it would be that its citizens should make sure their children learn about country music so that they would know "what this great land has done for us". After Wilson's visit, some local citizens decided to start an annual country music festival called 'Wilson's Folk Festival' which continues today with different stages throughout downtown/highlands park every year (the exception being 2009). One hundred years after his visit!
The area that is now Highland Park was first settled in the early 17th century by Scots-Irish. The first land grant was made to John Devereux, 1st Baron Devereux, in 1676. In 1814, a committee recommended that the name be changed from Scotch Plains to Highland Park after the hills in Scotland which were considered rugged and beautiful. The town was formally organized on July 1, 1824.
