Highland Park, New Jersey is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 43,190 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Passaic Valley region. The name "Highland Park" comes from a location on the east side of Hackensack River where the boundaries of both Highland and Teaneck townships intersect. One source claims that when Scotsman Donald Maclean came across this area in 1795 while exploring the lower reaches of the Hackensack River he called it "Glen Halt" because there was no high ground to which he could ascend to see if he had reached Mount Halt on Livingston Island. In 1834, John D'Albis surveyed lands here and named them Highlands after his home country, Scotland. In 1868, James Ayscough purchased land from Sir George Washington Morris for $2,000 cash. According to The Gazetteer of Bergen County (1871), "the first settler [of Highland Park] was James Ayscough who arrived here in 1868 from Ireland." He erected a farm on what is now Albany Avenue and built a house which still stands today. Highland Park is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,154 at the 2010 census. Highland Park was formed from parts of Camden Township on March 1, 1876, and became a city on November 3rd of the same year. Highland Park is located in the southeastern corner of Camden County and shares borders with Brick Township to its east and north. The name "Highland Park" comes from two sources: One source suggests that it derived from a family farmstead called "Hughie's Hill", located near present-day Livingston Avenue and Elm Street in what is now Highland Park; while another source suggests that it derives from an old Scottish place called "Hillhead". It has also been suggested that the name could be derived from Scots Gaelic h-igh-draig meaning "hillocky meadow". The first mention of any kind of settlement in what is now Highland Park dates back to 1764 when Captain John Smith made his report about a band of Cherokee Indians who had taken up residence among some nearby hills. At this time, there were no settlements within what is now Camden or New Jersey due to the lack of trees suitable for building construction. In 1776, during the American Revolution, General Washington's army passed through this area on their way southward towards Trenton; upon arrival at Short Hills (now part of West Orange), they destroyed several homes and killed many local Native Americans as part of their processional route. This event helped spur development within what is now Highland Park as people began to look for land where they could build permanent dwellings. In 1836, John Sutter founded Sutter's Land Company in today's South Brunswick which purchased over 6 square miles (15 km2) including what is now Highland Park from Michael Moriarty and others in order to develop it into a town site. On July 9th 1836 – just three weeks after Sutter had submitted his plans for town site to the Board of Chosen Freeholders – he announced that he would sell his land for $1 per acre ($27/km²). This was an amazing accomplishment given that at that time real estate prices were only around $0.50 peracre ($2/km²). The sale cleared $10 million which allowed Sutter to begin developing his new townsite by laying out streets and constructing buildings - much like how things are done today with zoning regulations being used as guidelines rather than laws dictating how properties should be developed! Accordingly, on August 15th 1836 – less than one month after submitting his plans – John Sutter became Mayor of HighlandPark! With such an early start to development within what is now HighlandsPark, it can be assumed that many important decisions were made during this time which have shaped our community today. Among these decisions include choosing aName for the newtownsite - since there wasn't one provided - calling it ""HighlandPark"" instead thereof ; establishing Streets & Parks Department ; creating waterworks ; setting up shops & restaurants etc.; all while still adhering to zoning regulations ! The city built expensive public works projects such as an opera house and a new library. However, by 1900, Highland Park had slid into decline and its population had plummeted to around 1,000 people. Today, it is only a small part of Paramus Borough.
