Highland Park is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 29,623 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. Highland Park was first settled in 1814 and incorporated as a township on February 14, 1837. On November 15, 1972, Highland Park became an independent city. The name "Highland Park" comes from two places: one is near where the town borders Essex County to the north and east; the other is a small valley in western Middlesex County that runs along Ridge Road between Spring Valley and West Orange Township. The name also refers to highland oak trees which are grown in large numbers hereabouts. The first settler in what would become Highland Park was John Crouse who arrived just after Christmas 1799 on horseback from North Carolina with his family of six children and wife Sarah (née Emerson). He built a cabin on what would later be known as "Crouse's Hill." By 1800, there were ten families living in Highland Park including Mr. Crouse himself and his three sons - John (1798-1874), Amos (1801-75) and Jonathan (1803-59). In 1814, when Scotch Settlement No. 1 was chartered by British authorities near Princeton Junction in Mercer County under direction of Major General Andrew Jackson for Scots Loyalists who had deserted or been removed from their homes during the American Revolution, four men - James Thomson (1784-1848), Allan Ramsay (1787-1864), Alexander Mackenzie (1789-1851) - purchased 4 acres of land northeast of present day Highland Park on Easton Road for £60 payable within ten years with interest at 8%. The group named themselves Scottish settlers' society because they wanted to avoid confusion with earlier English settlers who had also settled thereabouts including Captain Cook's crew who called themselves "the early Scots". They laid out a square mile plot named after themselves containing forty lots measuring 1/4 mile wide each side and spaced about three feet apart – thus forming self contained villages or hamlets that eventually numbered over 100 people total spread over seventeen tracts totaling .50 acre parcels (). Their successors remain today as Pioneer Village Association members which own most of these Lots still remaining within private Hands

Highland Park is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 41,461. Highland Park was founded in 1834 by Scots-Irish immigrants who had fled to America from Ireland during the Potato Famine. The name "Highland Park" originated from the highlands around Rossville and its location on both sides of Route 9W (now I-95). The first settler in Highland Park was John Laird, who arrived in 1834 from Antrim, Ulster Province, Northern Ireland. He built a cabin near what is now Livingston Avenue and Scotts Road. In 1840, Alexander McNaughton settled here and named his property "McNaughtown". In 1845th George Meek moved to this area and erected a log cabin on land now known as Meadowbrook Drive. A post office called Highland Park was established at this site in 1846; it remained in operation until 1851. In 1861, David White purchased 10 acres (40 hectares) of land east of Meadowbrook Drive for $100 cash from JohnLaird. White Developed these lands into lots for housing development beginning around 1865; some of this early housing remains standing today as part of Highland Park's cultural heritage. The first school in Highland Park was opened at Meadowbrook Drive and Scotts Road on December 1st1866 by Reverend Drury McMullen with 24 students attending underprivileged children living nearby on Long Branch Road or adjacent properties along Ridgefield Avenue between Perth Amboy Borough lines (now also within Highlands Township boundaries). The school burned down one year later but was replaced by a new building which still stands today across Meadowbrook Drive from where it once stood In 1870 Samuel Brown erected a small frame house at 422 Main Street which served as his home until his death in 1902 aged 85 years old One year after Browns house came another small frame house next door at 424 Main Street which housed Mrs Goldsmiths grocery business until 1898 when it too went out of business Hughes Store House No 2 opened soon afterwards making this block 4 houses long before any store ever became located there today! This early commercial development can be seen throughout much of current day Highlands Township including many old homes found behind convenience stores or strip malls today
