Highland Park is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 28,521 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is considered part of the North Bergen/Old West statistical area. The first settlement in what would become Highland Park was founded by Scotsmen who migrated to America in the mid-19th century. The Scotsman, Alexander Cunningham, erected a small cabin on "Cunningham's Bluff" overlooking the Hackensack River. In 1868, Scottish immigrants John and Jane MacLeod settled here also and named their new home after their birthplace - Lochdubh ( Loch Leven). In 1875, Irish immigrants Fergus O'Neill and his family arrived from County Clare and purchased land near Highland Park from Cunningham. They named their new village Coleraine after one of their relatives living in Scotland. Over time other groups had moved into or adjacent to Highland Park including Germans, Italians and Jews; however it remained primarily an Anglo-Saxon enclave until 1940 when racially motivated violence erupted between Italian Americans and American Negroes over access to housing opportunities in North Bergen Township." In 1924 the municipality of South Brunswick formed from portions of Ridgefield Township east of Weehawken Avenue and south of Stroud Road with a population of 726 people; Hibiscus Heights annexed as part of that municipality in 1931 (it had been a separate township since 1887). In 1930, parts of Manor Township west along Route 233 were annexed into Highlands as well (the remaining portion was split off as Ridgefield Borough). In 1951 Hibernia Heights again became an annexe within Highlands but this time it included all OFDRA development around Manchester Avenue northward to where Keepers Valley Drive meets the river outside present day Highland Park proper." Highland Park is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,569 at the 2010 census. Highland Park was formed on May 10, 1875 from part of Hamilton Township. It is adjacent to Paterson and had a population of 34,824 as of the 2000 census. The area now known as Highland Park was first inhabited by the Lenape people who occupied what is today northeastern Burlington County. In 1683, English colonists founded Princeton on the site where present-day Princeton University stands. The name "Highland Park" comes from two grants made to Sir George Carteret by King George III in 1765 for land that included what is now Highland Park and portions of Hackensack and Morris Counties. The Borough of Hamilton was formed on October 20, 1875 from a portion of Ulster Township including much of what is today Highland Park. On October 10th, 1875, it became effective when all parts were annexed into the new borough except for unincorporated areas east and west of Second Avenue which remained separate municipalities until 1945 when they were combined into one municipality under the name “Hamilton Township”
In 1868, Highland Park was platted as a township and named for the highlands of Scotland. The first settler in the township was James Macintosh, who came to live in what is now Highland Park in 1870. In 1871, David Humphreys settled in what is now Highland Park and soon became one of the most influential men in the town. He served as a justice of the peace and also founded two small businesses which remain important today. In 1875, when Highland Park became a village, Humphreys donated land to create a public square that still remains today. In 1888, Appleton Brothers built a large factory located on what is now Third Street in Highland Park. This factory continued to produce goods until it closed its doors in 1978. The townspeople were not happy with this development and staged a protest against it. However, Appleton's successor made the decision to continue production within their building until they were forced to close due to economic problems. Overall,Appleton's factory has been responsible for creating some of the most significant cultural memories in Highland Park history.
