Highland Park is a town in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,827 at the 2010 census. Highland Park was named after the highlands of Scotland. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Highland Park were Scottish Presbyterians who came to trade with the local Lenape Native Americans and take surveys for a new land grant from the Dutch East India Company in 1664. They named their settlement "Haltomanskill" after Lord Haltomans, one of the directors of the company. In 1719, John Craig (1702-1792), an Englishman who had come over as part of Sir George Washington's army during the American Revolution, purchased 1/4 mile (0.16 km) of land along Raritan River between present-day Fourth and Ninth Streets and Seventh Avenue and built a house there called Craig's Manor on behalf of his wife Janet Forbes (née Macdonald). He also acquired 8 miles (12 km) north of Highland Park on both sides of Delaware Bay as well as tracts along Lacey Creek which he used for hunting deer and fishing rights. In 1795, Robert Morris established himself in what is now Highland Park by purchasing 5 acres (20 m²) near where he would later build his mansion called Mount Lebanon Cemetery. Morris began draining swamps that lay between Upper Darby Township and Camden County for farming purposes; he also built roads through these lands so that goods could be brought from those areas easily. By 1814, Morris had founded two townships within Camden County: Livingston Township to the east and Camden Township to the west thereof were formed from parts of Highlands Township including most of what is now Highland Park
The first people to live in the area now known as Highland Park were the Lenape. In 1666, Captain John Smith and his group of settlers traveled down the Susquehanna River and found a tract of land that was then part of Pennsylvania. They named their new settlement after the highland plateau where they saw herds of deer and other animals. The first homes in Highland Park were built by farmers who had come from upstate New York. By 1802, there were over 100 dwellings in Highland Park.
