Hawthorne is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Hawthorne was founded by Englishman John Hawthorne in 1748 as a small farming community on the banks of the Delaware River. The name was derived from an Indian word meaning "place where hawks nested." After years of growth and development, Hawthorne became a large city in its own right by 1905. In 1958, it merged with nearby Rankinville to form one municipality. extant buildings date back to 1802 when land for the town was first purchased by John Dickinson and his wife Abigail (née Moreau). They named their farm "Newburgh," after Westchester County, New York where they were living at the time. On July 4, 1802, Dickinson and Moreau donated this property comprising present-day Hawthorne Township to Mercer County for settlement by Americans who would be loyal to America. The township's first post office opened in 1814 under the name Branchburg; it closed in 1837 due to lack of customers. One reason why few businesses moved into Hawthorne during its early years may have been because there were no roads or rails available until after Confederation in 1783 which made traveling between Philadelphia and other points much more difficult than it is today! In 1850, John Cavanaugh bought 640 acres (24 hectares) east of present-day Hawthorne and founded what would become known as Cavanaugh’s Mills which now includes most of that section of town lying east of Beech Road/Route 12 southbound on Route 6 northbound intersecting with Center Road/Route 5 westbound), making it one of only a few places still standing from those early days when mills were important economic engines driving local growth rates throughout much of rural America! era cavanaugh

Hawthorne, New Jersey is a borough located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 5,895. The name "Hawthorne" comes from Old English hwalh meaning 'a wooded place'. The first permanent settler in what is now Hawthorne was Nicholas Hawthorne who arrived in 1676. He named his tract of land after himself and his family's home at Haverhill (now part of Union City). In 1753, George Washington purchased 1000 acres adjacent to present-day Hawthorne from Nicholas Hawthorne for $1/acre. By 1800, however, only 10 acres remained uncollected by Washington. In 1814 Nathaniel Jarvis Thomson donated 640 acres of land to the town of Perth Amboy as part of a homestead grant program which had been initiated by Governor James K. Polk. The grant also included an allowance for 30 years' use of the property as a town center with a library and schoolhouse on its northwest corner lot. On July 1st 1814., Hawthorne became one of the original towns in Bergen County when it was created from portions of Perth Amboy and Elizabethtown. The mainstay businesses throughout most of its history have been small farmers and their families who raised livestock or grew crops such as corn and hay on their properties until large factory farming developed in the late 19th century; this led to increased competition for resources and drove down prices for goods essential to life as locals struggled to make ends meet. However, many small businesses have continued through the years thanks to support from volunteers or donations from community members over time including: Google Street View mapping service used by students at Monmouth University; local bike shop which has served customers since 1978; Stroudsburg Area Chamber Orchestra which offers free concerts every Saturday evening at 7 p.m.; heritage walking tour service offered by township historiography department during summer months
In 1802, John Hawthorne was a landowner in what is now Hawthorne Township. He operated a gristmill on the Haworth River and also raised hay and cattle. In 1812 he married Margaret Rice, who was from Monmouth County. The couple had two children: Johnathan and Eliza. In 1818, JohnHawthorne sold his land to James Brown for $2,500. Brown built a sawmill on the Haworth River and started producing lumber. In 1830, JohnHawthorne's son Jonathan bought the mill from Brown and continued running it until 1861.
